DETROIT -- The Slippery Rock University volleyball team dropped its first two matches of the season Friday at the Warrior Invite in Detroit, Mich., falling to Aquinas 3-1 in the opener and Urbana 3-2 in the nightcap. Both matches were part of a tournament being hosted by Wayne State University.
In the opening match against Aquinas, The Rock won the first set of the match, 25-23, before Aquinas rebounded to win the next three sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-19) to seal the match.
Junior
Keira Peoples led the team with 14 kills on 37 attempts and also finished with three block assists, four digs and one ace. Sophomore
Kristin Slavoski and freshman
Hannah McShea both added 11 kills, while McShea also totaled 14 digs and a team-high three service aces.
Senior
Stacey Domer led the team defensively with 23 digs while sophomore
Kaylee Smith added 13 digs, one solo block and two aces. Junior
Anna Bixler led the team in assists with 19 and also added six digs. Junior
Kim Wilson added 17 assists for The Rock.
Aquinas finished the match with a hitting percentage of .179 to The Rock's .090 and held a 49-45 advantage in total kills. Mollie Lounds led the team with 14 kills, while Katie Vander Meer added 10 kills. Sarah LeClair led the defensive effort with a match-high 31 digs.
In the evening match with Urbana, The Rock dropped the first two sets (24-26, 21-25) before battling back to win the next two (25-20, 25-20) and force a decisive fifth set. In the finale, Urbana held on to win 15-13, despite SRU rallying from a four-point deficit to tie the score at 12-12.
McShea led the offensive attack with 20 kills, three assists and one ace. She also finished with 18 digs. Smith finished with 19 kills, three assists, two aces and a team-high 21 digs.
Kim Wilson finished with 27 assists with Bixler adding 24 assists and 17 digs. Domer finished with 20 digs.
The Rock finished the match with 68 kills and a hitting percentage of .151, edging Urbana's .129 percentage and 54 kills.
Slippery Rock opened the season at 0-2, while Urbana evened its record at 1-1. The Warrior Invite continues Saturday at Wayne State, with The Rock taking on West Liberty State at 2 p.m. and Wayne State at 7 p.m.
