Rock falls to #2 California, 88-71

SRU shoots 51.8% from the field but comes up short in its upset bid

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The No.2 ranked California University (Pa.) Vulcans defeated Slippery Rock, 88-71, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division contest Wednesday night in Morrow Field House.
 
The Rock put forth their fifth-best shooting effort of the season, converting on 51.8% of their attempts from the field, but were plagued by 26 turnovers in the game.
 
California led wire-to-wire with all five starters finishing in double figures, led by Brooke Williams' double-double of 33 points and 12 rebounds.
 
The Vulcans opened the game with five quick points and never looked back, pulling out to an 18-point lead at one point in the opening 20 minutes and finishing the half leading by a 47-31 margin.
 
The lead reached as many as 24 points in the second half and The Rock could not get closer than 15 points.
 
Slippery Rock was led by Amanda Nero (pictured above), who paced four players in double figures with 18 points. Jess Schake added 16 points whileNikki Presto finished with 13 points and Sasha Sales added 12 points, a team-high eight rebounds and four steals.
 
California's Williams was joined in double figures by Kayla Smith with 17 points, Lindsay Johnson with 13, Amber Dubyak with 11 and Crystal Andrews with 10.
 
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 54.7% from the field and 46.7% (7-of-15) from behind the three-point arc. Slippery Rock was perfect from the free throw line, converting on all 10 of its attempts and held a 30-28 rebounding advantage.
 
With the loss, The Rock drops to 7-13 overall and 2-5 in PSAC-West action. California improves to 18-2 overall and an unblemished 7-0 in league play.
 
Slippery Rock will stay home Saturday to host Mercyhurst in a PSAC-West contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Morrow Field House.
