JOHNSTOWN, Pa.—The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team earned its first win (1-3) of the season with a 60-47 win over Georgian Court in the second day of the Lady Cat Classic hosted by Pitt-Johnstown on Sunday.
Senior
Nikki Presto was named to the All-Tournament team by scoring 22 points and 18 rebounds through two games in the tournament.
Freshman
Emilee Vitez recorded her first double-digit scoring game with 11 points and added four rebounds and two assists. Senior
Julie Molloy led the team with 12 points in 31 minutes. Presto recorded five points and six rebounds. Chere' Marshall and
Bethany Caudill both recorded eight points with Marshall adding two steals.
Amanda Mikatavage recorded two blocks in the win.
Dana Wert led all scorers with 13 points and four assists off the bench for the Lions (1-2). Christina White recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Lauren Staats recorded eight points, two assists and a steal.
Both teams exchanged baskets in the early going of the game to be tied 4-4, Mikatavage made a layup that would give The Rock a lead they would hold on to for the entire half.
Georgian Court would bring the score to 12-9 with 11:43 left in the first half when Dana Wert scored her first three-pointer of the game. Caudill would respond with a three of her own before being answered with another three by Staats to bring it back to a three point 15-12 lead.
With 5:50 left in the first half, Marshall made two consecutive layups to give The Rock a 10 point 26-16 lead. The Lions would make it a four point game with 2:23 left in the half. Presto went to the line after being fouled by White and completed the three-point play to give SRU the 29-23 halftime lead.
Early in the second half, SRU had a 14 point lead in the first three minutes cut to eight when
Grace Palucis recorded a steal and
Alex Beatty made a jumper, then stole the ball in the defensive end to find Molloy for an easy layup to give The Rock the 41-29 lead.
In the final six minutes of the game, Vitez recorded eight points to help The Rock capture their first win of the season.
SRU shot 52% (26-50) from the floor, 28.6% (2-7) from three-point range and 54.5% (6-11) from the free-throw line. The Rock shot 60.9% from the floor in the second half.
Georgian Court shot 28.3% (15-53) from the floor, 23.1% (6-26) from three-point range and 57.9% (11-19) from the free-throw line.
The Lions did outrebound SRU 36-34 while The Rock led in steals 7-4.
The Rock returns to action November 30 against Urbana at Morrow Field House. The game is set to start at 6 pm.
