Julie Molloy scored a team-high 18 points and senior guard
Nikki Presto added 15 points to lead the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team's effort Wednesday night in a 74-59 loss to visiting Seton Hill University in non-conference action in Morrow Field House.
Freshmen
Amanda Mikatavage and
Emilee Vitez each grabbed six rebounds to lead The Rock (0-2) in that category, while senior guard Chere' Marshall handed out a team-best four assists.
Jordan Burkes scored 18 points to lead Seton Hill and tie Molloy for game-high honors. Katie Linter added 15 points for the Griffins and Erika Haintx and Anne Marie Olesky each chipped in 10 points.
The Rock held the lead throughout the first 13 and a half minutes of action, including a 10-point (18-8) advantage midway through the opening 20-minute period.
The hosts had an eight-point, 26-18, lead with 6:15 left in the half before Seton Hill scored 18 of the last 20 first-half points to take a 36-28 lead into the intermission.
The Griffins' run was aided by The Rock turning the ball over 14 times in the first half, miscues that resulted in 17 points for the guests.
SRU trimmed the deficit to five points (38-33) 90 seconds into the second half of action but was unable to overcome the Griffins' end-of-the-half run as Seton Hill did not trail in the final 20 minutes of action.
The Rock finished the game with a respectable 42% effiiciency (19 of 45) in its field goals attempts, hit 44% (8 of 18) from 3-point range and made 77% (13 of 17) of its free throws.
Seton Hill shot 49% (30 of 61), hit 50% (10 of 20) from 3-point range and sank four of six free throws.
SRU had almost twice as many turnovers as its guests, 23-12.
The Rock returns to action this weekend, when it take on Lake Erie College of Ohio and Georgian Court University of New Jersey on back-to-back days in the Pitt-Johnstown tournament. Tipoff for both games is set for 1 p.m.
