WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw after double overtime at California (Pa.) Tuesday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division contest.
“The first half was a stalemate,” said head coach
Noreen Herlihy. “But we really came out of the blocks in the second half and dominated possession. We kept threatening throughout the second half, but we just couldn't reward ourselves.”
The Rock finished the game with advantages of 15-12 in total shots, including 4-2 in the overtime sessions, and 5-2 in shots on goal. California (Pa.) held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Alli Bird made her second collegiate start in goal for Slippery Rock, earning the tie after recording two saves in the game. Paula Jackson registered four saves for California (Pa.) and the Vulcans picked up one defensive save to finish with five total.
Ashley Paganie led the way for SRU with five total shots, including one shot on goal, while
Alyssa Barrett added four total shots and a team-high two shots on goal.
Alison Hindley and
Shelby Ward each finished with two shots.
Amanda Heister was the only Vulcan player to record more than one shot, finishing with four total shot and each of her team's shots on goal.
With the tie, Slippery Rock moves to 5-3-3 overall this season and evens out a 3-3-3 in the PSAC-West. The Vulcans remain atop the league standings with an 8-3-1 overall record and a 6-2-1 PSAC-West mark.
The Rock is back in action when it hosts Shippensburg Saturday at Egli Field as part of the PSAC's “Red Card Cancer” initiative. Donations will be collected at the gate and a 50/50 raffle will be held with all proceeds benefitting the American Cancer Society. The event will take place at The Rock men's soccer game against West Chester at noon and will carry on throughout the SRU-Shippensburg women's game at 2:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear red in support of the cause.
