CLARION, Pa. --
Shelby Layman scored in the 51st minute to lead the Slippery Rock University women's soccer team to 1-0 win at Clarion in a crucial Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division contest Saturday night.
The Rock held a 5-2 advantage in total shots and a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal in the first half, but could not find the back of the net, sending the game to halftime scoreless.
Layman scored the lone goal of the game at the 50:48 mark when she found the lower left corner of the net behind Clarion keeper Jenna Kulik.
The Rock defense held Clarion without a single shot on goal in the second half and finished the game with advantages of 9-4 in total shots, 5-1 in shots on goal and 5-3 in corner kicks.
Freshman
Alli Bird earned the win and the shutout in goal for Slippery Rock after recording one save in the game. Bird improved her season record to 4-0-1 with three shutouts. She has allowed one goal in 425 minutes between the posts for a 0.21 goals against average.
Kulik was credited with the loss after allowing one goal and recording four saves.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 8-3-3 overall and 4-3-3 in the PSAC-West. Clarion drops to 4-10-2 overall and 0-9-1 in divisional play.
The Rock will host Edinboro in another crucial PSAC-West game Tuesday at Egli Field. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
