SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team scored five first half goals and held Wheeling Jesuit without a single shot on goal en route to recording a 5-0 victory in non-conference action Wednesday at Egli Field.
A dominating win wasn't the only good news for The Rock on Wednesday, as the team also moved up to seventh in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region poll released by the Division II selection committee.
The Rock dominated the game from the opening minute, finishing with advantages of 27-1 in total shots, 17-0 in shots on goal and 7-1 in corner kicks.
Ashley Paganie led the way for Slippery Rock with two goals and two assists, with
Juliana Howell adding one goal and one assist and
Shelby Layman contributing two assists.
Howell scored the game's opening goal just 46 seconds in after Layman collected a rebounded shot from Lady Cardinal keeper Jessica Park. Layman found Howell in front of the net for the easy score.
Paganie scored her first of the game in the eighth minute after beating the defense down the middle of the field and converting on an assist from Howell.
Jordan Settimio scored her first goal in a Slippery Rock uniform in the 14th minute, heading home a corner kick from Paganie.
Paganie notched her second goal of the game and team-high eighth of the season in the 16th minute after making a long run through the defense and converting on an assist from Layman.
The fifth and final goal of the game came in the 39th minute when
Alyssa Barrett scored on a header off a free kick by Paganie.
Alli Bird played the first half in goal for The Rock, earning the win to improve to 3-0-1 on the season.
Sarah Lacy played the second half in net. Neither keeper was forced to make a save in the game.
Park was credited with the loss for Wheeling Jesuit after allowing four goals and recording nine saves. Chelsey Trefnoff allowed one goal and made two saves in the game.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 7-3-3 overall. Wheeling Jesuit drops to 5-9-0.
The Rock returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action Saturday night with a 6:30 p.m. matchup at Clarion.
