Paganie's free kick seals 2-1 win over Ship

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
-- Ashley Paganie scored a free kick goal from 40-yards out in the 79th minute to propel the Slippery Rock University women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Shippensburg Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover game at Thompson Stadium.

With the score tied at 1-1, Paganie hit a booming free kick from 40 yards out that hit the crossbar and then deflected off Lady Raider keeper Beth Long and into the net for the game-winner.

Shippensburg struck first when Gayle Kuntzmann scored her eighth goal of the season off an assist from Amanda Greenawalt in the 17th minute.

The Rock responded when Alison Hindley netted her seventh goal of the season off a free kick in the 26th minute, slipping her shot into the lower left corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1.

Paganie finished the game with an impressive seven total shots, including four shots on goal.

Alli Bird was credited with the win in goal for Slippery Rock after allowing one goal and registering four saves. The win improves her record to 2-0-1 on the season.

Long was credited with the loss after allowing two goals and recording seven saves.

Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 14-11 in total shots, 9-5 in shots on goal and 6-3 in corner kicks.

With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 6-3-3 overall. Shippensburg drops to 5-6-2.

The Rock is back in action Wednesday when Wheeling Jesuit travels to Egli Field for a 4 p.m. non-conference matchup.

Notes: Notes: Saturday's game was part of a cancer awareness initiative titled “Red Card Cancer.” The initiative is being carried out within the PSAC this season. Teams wore a specially designed t-shirt during pregame warm-ups and donations and a 50/50 raffle were held. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.
