ERIE, Pa. -- Hosting Mercyhurst scored a goal in the 89th minute of action Wednesday afternoon to hand the 12th-ranked Rock a 2-1 loss in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action.
The loss was the first suffered by The Rock this season and dropped the Green and White's overall record to 4-1-1 and its PSAC-West mark to 3-1-1.
Mercyhurst improved its overall record to 5-1-1 and its division mark to 3-1-1.
Tuesday's outcome left SRU and Mercyhurst at least temporarily tied for the top spot in the PSAC-West standings. Gannon and Indiana (Pa.), both of which entered Wednesday action one point behind The Rock, could move into first place with a win Wednesday.
PSAC standings are determined on a point system that awards three points for a division-game win and one point for a division-game tie.
The Rock and Mercyhurst both have 10 points, while Ganon and IUP began Wednesday's action with nine points each.
SRU was ranked second in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II Atlantic Regional poll released earlier in the day. Indiana was ranked third, Mercyhurst fourth and Gannon seventh.
West Chester, the No. 2 team in the NSCAA national poll, sits atop the regional ranking.
The Rock took a 1-0 lead Wednesday on a 32nd-minute goal by freshman midfielder
Chelsea Sneed off an assist from sophomore defender
Rachel Knapp.
The hosts tied the score at 1-1 with a 65th-minute goal by Karla Vogt, assisted by Sarah Powell.
Powell scored the game-winning goal off her own deflected shot, which Rock senior goalie
Sarah Lacy rejected but was unable to contain.
Lacy recorded eight saves and Lakers goalie Rebecca Heintzman had five saves as the hosts outshot SRU by a 24-10 margin.
The Rock returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday, when it will host Mansfield in a PSAC "crossover" game at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
