MANKATO, Minn. -- Rock sprint specialist
Brad Mueller ran a school-record time of 6.65 Saturday to win the 60-meter dash national championship.
Mueller, a graduate student from Valencia and Mars High School, set the school record for the fifth time in five competitions this winter.
He is The Rock's first-ever indoor national champion, SRU's first track and field national champion since Karyn McCready won the outdoor women's javelin throw in 2004 and the first Rock men's track and field national champion since Steve Rihel won the outdoor javelin throw in 1997.
As a national champion, Mueller also earned All-America honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Trivia time: Mueller's time in the national finals, had it been recorded in Division I competition, would have earned him a No. 7 national finish.
The other Rock representative in the men's national championship competition,
Pat Reagan placed ninth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:40.58. His ninth-place finish was one spot shy of earning him All-America status.
The Rock had three student-athletes compete in the women's national championship event.
