SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Rock established a new standard for single-game scoring Thursday night when it rolled to a 111-39 win over visiting Salem International (W. Va.) in non-conference action in Morrow Field House.
Thursday's point total eclipsed the former school record set in 1982-83, when SRU dumped Indiana (Pa.) by a 109-69 margin.
Thursday's game was the first time SRU surpassed the 100-point mark since the 1999-2000 season when the Green and White recorded a 101-79 win at Clarion.
Salem International's point total was the lowest allowed by a Rock women's basketball team since SRU held Clarion (60-39) and Lock Haven (58-39) to the same point total during the 2005-06 season.
To find a lower point total for a Rock opponent, you have to go back to the second game of the 2001-02 season, when SRU beat Erskine (N.C.) 87-38.
Thursday's win improved the Green and White's season record to 3-4.
Salem International fell to 0-5 and gave up more than 100 points for the third time this season. California (Pa.) beat the Tigers by a 117-38 score, while Indiana (Pa.) rang up a 108-21 victory.
Junior point guard Nikki Presto (pictured above) scored a career-high 21 points, grabbed six rebounds and handed out five assists to lead The Rock attack Thursday night.
Senior post player Sasha Sales added 20 points, a team-high seven rebounds and four assists; senior post player Haley Gaidosh chipped in 18 points and junior post player Jess Schake finished with 14 points, six rebounds and six steals. Senior shooting guard Amanda Nero added 13 points and junior wing player Julie Molloy handed out a career-high eight assists.
Salem International scored the first basket of the game before The Rock began its sprint to the finish line.
By halftime, The Rock enjoyed a 32-point (54-22) advantage. A 57-17 scoring margin in the final 20 minutes closed the deal.
The Rock shot 64.1% (50 of 78) from the field, 37.5% (3 of 8) from 3-point range and 72.7% (8 of 11) from the foul line. The hosts enjoyed a 34-28 rebounding advantage and were on the good side of a 34-5 turnover comparison.
SRU is idle until Dec. 17, when it will visit Pitt-Johnstown for a 7 p.m. non-conference game.
That tips off a four-game road trip for The Rock, which is not home until a Jan. 10 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" game vs. Millersville (1 p.m. tipoff).
