ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Schake twins, Alissa and Jess, shared team-high scoring honors with 14 points each Saturday afternoon to lead The Rock to a 72-51 win over Lake Erie (Ohio) College in first-round action of the Holiday Inn Express Tournament hosted by Ashland University.
Jess Schake (right photo) also led The Rock in rebounds with six and had two steals, while
Alissa Schake (left photo) had a team-best four steals and three rebounds.
Three other players came close to recording double-digit scoring totals for The Rock, which improved its season record to 2-3.
Julie Molloy and
Amanda Nero each scored nine points, while
Sasha Sales chipped in eight points in a substitute role.
Nikki Presto handed out five assists for the Green and White.
The Rock will play the hosting AU Lady Eagles in the tournament's championship game at 3 p.m. Sunday. Ashland beat Urbana (Ohio) 92-63 in Saturday's second game.
Lake Erie (1-5), which is in its first full year as an NCAA Division II institution, will play Urbana in the consolation game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Storm of Painesville, Ohio, scored the first two points of the game Saturday and held a 5-4 lead with 17:13 left to play in the first half before The Rock took the lead for good and eventually assumed full command of the situation.
The Rock held a 10-point, 25-15, lead with four minutes left in the first half and extended the margin to "a baker's dozen," 35-22, at intermission.
SRU's lead was never less than eight points in the final 20 minutes of action and reached a high-water mark of 23 points (72-49) with two minutes left to play in the game.
The Green and White's shooting percentages showed just how easily the victory was recorded.
SRU finished the game with a 53.7% (29 of 54) efficiency from the field after hitting 51.7% (14 of 27) of its first-half shots. The Rock shot 73.3% (11 of 15) from the foul line and hit 3 of 15 (20%) attempts from beyond the 3-point arc.
Lake Erie, on the other hand, shot 34% (17 of 50) from the field in the game after hitting a frigid 25% (7 of 28) of its first-half attempts. The Storm hit 62.5% (15 of 24) of its free throws and an icy 9.1% (2 of 22) from beyond the arc.
Following Sunday's game, The Rock returns home to entertain Salem International (W. Va.) in a 7 p.m. game Thursday in Morrow Field House.
