California hands Rock 83-57 setback

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Senior post player KellyAnn Staudinger scored a team-high 17 points and sophomore wing player Julie Molloy added 11 points Wednesday night to pace The Rock effort in an 83-57 loss to visiting California (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action in Morrow Field House.
 
The loss dropped SRU's season record to 7-12 and its PSAC-West mark to 1-3.

The Rock hosts Shippensburg (15-5, 3-2) in a 3 p.m. division game Saturday in Morrow Field House.
 
California, which received votes in this week's Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division II national poll, recorded its 14th straight win. The Vulcans now own a 17-2 overall record and are 4-0 in division play.

California's win, coupled with Shippensburg win Wednesday night over fifth-ranked Indiana (Pa.), moved the Vulcans into sole possession of first place in the PSAC-West.
 
The visitors held a nine-point, 36-29, lead at intermission and outscored The Rock by a 47-28 margin in the final 20 minutes.
 
Staudinger scored 14 of The Rock's first 18 points in the game.
 
Sophomore post player Haley Gaidosh led The Rock in rebounding with six, while sophomore point guard Sandra Busser handed out seven assists.
 
The Rock closes out the first half of the PSAC-West schedule Wednesday at Clarion before it will host Lock Haven in a 3 p.m. game Feb. 9.
 
The Feb. 9 game will be part of SRU's “Girls and Women in Sports Day” in Morrow Field House. Girls 14 years of age and under can participate in a multiple-sport clinic starting at 10 a.m. and then watch the women's game at 1 p.m.
 
The Rock women's basketball team will also host a breast cancer awareness project as part of the Feb. 9 event.
