ERIE, Pa. -- Redshirt sophomore post player
Haley Gaidosh recorded a "double-double" with 20 points and 11 rebounds Thursday night but could not lead The Rock to victory.
Hosting Gannon (8-4) scored a basket just before the final buzzer to hand SRU (4-8) a heartbreaking 83-81 overtime setback in non-conference action at the Hammermill Center.
Gaidosh was one of three Rock players to finish with double-digit scoring totals. Junior guard
Amanda Nero scored 18 points, while sophomore wing player
Julie Molloy added 15 points.
Junior guard Chere' Marshall, playing her first game since sustaining a broken hand nine games ago, chipped in eight points and seven rebounds.
The loss was a hard one for SRU to accept as the Green and White held a five-point, 72-67, lead with 0:26 left in regulation time.
Gannon got a three-point basket with 0:03 left in regulation to tie the score at 73-73 and send the game into overtime.
The Rock held one lead in overtime, 78-77, on a trey by Molloy with 1:05 left before a long-range bomb by Nero with 0:13 left tied the count at 81-81.
Nero hit five shots from beyond the arc and Molloy nailed three bombs to lead The Rock to an 8-of-14 (57.1%) performance from three-point range.
The Rock shot 43.1% (31 of 72) from the field and 64.7% (11 of 17) from the foul line and held a 51-38 advantage in rebounds.
SRU will now seek to snap a five-game losing streak at 1 p.m. Sunday when it hosts Cheyney in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" game in Morrow Field House.
That game will open a four-game homestand for SRU.
Note: Rock athletic director
Paul Lueken announced Thursday there will be no admission charge Sunday for the women's/men's doubleheader vs. Cheyney.
