Rock knocks off Lock Haven, 69-65

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --
The Rock evened its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division record at 1-1 and improved its season record to 7-10 Saturday with a 69-65 win over hosting Lock Haven.

Senior post player Nijha McNeely led The Rock attack with 18 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore wing player Julie Molloy added 15 points, sophomore point guard Sandra Busser 12 points and six rebounds and senior post KellyAnn Staudinger seven points and eight rebounds.

SRU trailed throughout the opening half of action as the Green and White held only one lead in the opening 20 minutes, a 5-4 edge with 17:30 left before intermission.

The score was tied twice in the first half before Lock Haven took a 33-32 edge into halftime.

The Rock turned the tables on the hosts in the second half as the guests held the lead for most of the final 20 minutes.

A 13-5 Rock run in the first four and a half minutes of the final stanza pushed the Green and White to a 45-37 advantage, but Lock Haven answered with a 15-7 rally to tie the score at 52-52 with 9:30 left to play.

The Rock came right back with six unanswered points to take the lead for good, but had to hold its collective breath on two occasions as the hosts trimmed the margin to one point.

The Rock finished the game with a 40.4% (19 of 47) efficiency from the field, hit five of nine (55.5%) of its 3-point attempts and canned 26 of 35 (74.3%) charity tosses.

The guests outscored their hosts by a 26-7 margin from the foul line as Lock Haven attempted only 10 free throws.

Lock Haven hit 42.4% (25 of 59) of its shots from the field and made eight of 18 (44.4%) of its 3-point attempts.

Behind the lead of McNeely and Staudinger, The Rock enjoyed a 34-23 rebounding advantage.

SRU's next game will be Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., when it will visit nationally ranked Indiana U. of Pa. for a PSAC-West contest.

The Rock is then idle for one week before hosting division rival California U. of Pa. in a 6 p.m. game Jan. 23 in Morrow Field House.
