SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Junior guard Chere' Marshall nailed a 3-point bomb as the final buzzer sounded Tuesday night to give The Rock a 61-58 win over Fairmont State in the home opener in Morrow Field House.
The win was SRU's second in as many games and gives the Green and White a 2-1 record heading into its Thanksgiving break.
The Rock returns to action Monday, when it will host Mercyhurst in a 7 p.m. game.
Marshall's game-winning trey came 11 seconds after Fairmont State's Ashley Vavrek hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 58-58 and just over a minute after another Vavrek trey had knotted the score at 55-55.
Those two bombs by Vavrek capped a furious comeback by the Falcons, who erased an 11-point deficit in the final eight minutes of action.
SRU held an 11-point, 31-20, lead at halftime and had two 14-point advantages in the first 10 minutes of the second half, the latter a 48-34 cushion with 10:39 left to play.
Marshall's game-winning shot gave her team-high scoring honors with 13 points. She also had a team-best six rebounds.
Julie Molloy and KellyAnn Staudinger each chipped in 10 points for SRU, while Nijha McNeely and Nikki Presto each had eight points and Sandra Busser seven points.
