Jessica Student and
Heather Walbright each recorded a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship meet qualifying time over the weekend to headline The Rock's effort in the Indiana U. of Pa. Invitational.
Student recorded a 1:02.50 time (10th place) in the 100 butterfly, while Walbright had a 2:02.31 time (12th place) in the 200 freestyle.
"Both swims were amazing races and contributed to an overall great meet," Rock assistant coach Nathan Walters stated.
In addition to the 100 butterfly, Student also earned berths in the finals in three other events. She placed 11th in the 200 butterfly and 16th in both the 100 backstroke (2:26.15) and 200 backstroke (2:26.15).
Walbright earned berths in three finals. In addition to her 12th-place finish in the 200 freestyle, she placed 14th in both the 100 freestyle (57.51) and 500 freestyle (5:29.62).
As a team, The Rock earned 14 berths in finals.
Beth Choike placed 12th in the 200 backstroke (2:21.72) and 14th in the 100 backstroke (1:05.79) to round out the multiple finalists.
Jessica Kieler finished 12th in the 200 butterfly, one spot ahead of
Raquel Woerner, while
Betsy Wilson placed 15th in the 400 individual medley (5:19.31),
Lauren Hervatin was 15th in the 200 freestyle (2:04.13) and
Caitlin Henney finished 16th in the 200 breaststroke (2:49.91).
The top 16 times in preliminary heats earned berths in the finals.
"This was one of the fastest IUP Invites in years," Walters said, "so qualifying for the finals was an accomplishment in itself."
As a team, The Rock finished last in the six-team field with 182 points. IUP won the team title with 832, followed by St. Francis with 803, Youngstown State 613.5, Lock Haven 284 and Mt. St. Mary's 244.5.
The Rock returns to action Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, when it will compete in the Grove City Invitational.
