SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University field hockey team begins its 2026 season 1 p.m. Thursday against Frostburg State University in non-conference action at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SERIES HISTORY
Slippery Rock holds a 19-13-1 overall record in the all-time series with Frostburg State, including an 11-5 mark against the Bobcats at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. SRU is also 6-4 in the series since FSU moved up to Division II. The Rock and Bobcats have split the season series in each of the last two years with each team winning on their respective home field.
 
LAST MEETING
A third-quarter goal by Coral Piramo in the 45th minute proved to be the difference in a 1-0 Slippery Rock victory over Frostburg State on Oct. 15, 2025 at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
The Rock held advantages over the Bobcats in shots (13-8) and penalty corners (8-3) while Leah Riegling made three saves in the shutout. Haylie Sucharski added a defensive save and Roz Mikulak assisted on Piramo's game-winner.
 
Traditionally a close contest between what's typically two evenly matched programs, each of the last seven meetings between The Rock and Bobcats have been decided by one goal including four of the games that needed overtime to be decided.

SRU IN SEASON OPENERS
Slippery Rock is 7-6 in its last 13 season-openers. Most recently, The Rock opened 2025 with a 1-0 victory over Adelphi. If victorious Thursday, Slippery Rock will have won three consecutive season-opening games which would be tied for the second longest stretch of season-opening wins inside the program: the record at SRU for consecutive season-opening wins is five (1985-89).
 
GETTING GOING WITH FROSTBURG
Thursday's game serves as the fifth time that Slippery Rock will open its schedule against Frostburg State. SRU is 3-1 in the previous four openers against FSU with the most recent meeting being a 2-1 win in 2024.
 
Frostburg State is The Rock's second most common season-opening opponent, with the first being American International (7 games / 3-4).

BUT CATCH THEM WHILE YOU CAN
Following The Rock's four consecutive games at home to start the season, SRU embarks on an even longer road trip that will see Slippery Rock play five straight games away from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium from Sept. 22 – Oct. 7. Slippery Rock has had just one other five-game road trip since 1985: the 1999 team also played five consecutive road games.
 
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
Dating back to the 2010 season, Slippery Rock holds a commanding 45-27 (.625) record in non-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference games. SRU went 4-4 in non-conference play last year with wins over Adelphi, Pace, Converse and Roberts Wesleyan as well as losses to Lander, Shippensburg, Frostburg State and IUP.
 
TOUGH SLATE
Slippery Rock is scheduled to play a 17-game schedule consisting of eight non-conference games in addition to its nine-game PSAC gauntlet. Annually the toughest field hockey conference in Division II, 31 of the previous 36 national champions have come from the PSAC.
 
Of The Rock's 15 unique opponents in 2026, eight carried winning records a year ago with two others finishing just one game under .500.

HOFFMAN AND HUTCHINSON NAMED TO NFHCA WATCHLIST
Slippery Rock recently had two athletes named to the 2026 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II watchlist.
 
Senior forward Lucy Hutchinson and senior midfielder Hilary Hoffman represented Slippery Rock on the list of 42 athletes across NCAA Division II field hockey. Slippery Rock was one of 11 programs in Division II to have multiple athletes named to the watchlist.
 
The 2026 NFHCA Watchlist recognizes field hockey student-athletes who have demonstrated a high level of achievement and are considered among those with strong potential for NFHCA All-Region and All-America consideration this season.
 
ROCK SELECTS CAPTAINS FOR 2026
Senior Lucy Hutchinson and Paige Shannon were selected as team captains for the 2026, the SRU coaching staff recently announced.
 
RETURNING FIREPOWER
As previously mentioned, Slippery Rock returns the overwhelming majority of its offensive production from a season ago.
 
• Lucy Hutchinson: A native of Norwich, England, Hutchinson garnered her first All-PSAC recognition a season ago by scoring a team-high five goals over 13 games played, including a career-best nine starts. Three of Hutchinson's five goals in 2025 were of the game-winning variety.
 
• Hilary Hoffman: No other active Rock athlete has played more collegiate games than Hoffman, who enters her senior year having started 39 of her 41 career games played. The 2024 all-conference performer has recorded 24 career points on eight goals and eight assists over her first three seasons with 45 shots on goal. Despite being limited to nine games a season ago, Hoffman still recorded six points via two goals and two assists.
 
• Grace Williams: The forward / midfielder has scored goals in each of her first two collegiate seasons. Following a one-goal rookie season in 2024, Williams finished tied for second on The Rock in 2025 with six points on two goals and two assists while also being one of three SRU athletes to post double-digit shots on goal (11).
 
• Coral Piramo: After not appearing in a game as a freshman in 2024, Piramo was a constant on the field for SRU as a sophomore in 2025. The Huntington Beach, California native appeared in all 17 games with 14 starts in addition to finishing fourth on the team in points with five via two goals and one assist. Piramo, who placed nine of her 13 shots in 2025 on target, scored the game-winning goal in SRU's victory over Frostburg State.
 
• Maddie Orrson: As a freshman in 2025, Orrson appeared in all 17 games and scored two goals in addition to placing five of her seven shots on target.
 
• Roz Mikulak: A starter in 16 of 17 games played, Mikulak paced The Rock in assists last year with four all the while ranking first in both total shots (22) and shots on goal (16).
 
• Riley Cloude: The junior midfielder / back returns after being one of just three Rock athletes to start all 17 games last season en route to recording one goal and one assist.
 
OTHER TOP RETURNERS
• Leah Riegling: The only returning goalkeeper from 2025, Riegling started 11 games in 2025. After appearing in just one game in her first two years on campus, Riegling served as SRU's goalie of record for three of its five wins a season ago on the way to making 63 saves (.700) and carrying a 2.57 GAA. She ended the year ranked third in the PSAC in saves per game (5.25). 
 
• Haylie Sucharski: Enters her senior season coming off her best year to date at Slippery Rock that saw Sucharski appear in all 17 games while making eight starts and making four defensive saves. Sucharski ended 2025 tied for first in the PSAC, and ranked 11th in the nation, in defensive saves.
 
• Brooke Page / Ava Masorti: A pair of transfers prior to the 2025 season, both Page and Masorti were key pieces for SRU a year ago as Masorti started 12 of 17 games played and Page made in her 11 appearances.
 
• Hanna Thomas: A sophomore midfielder, Thomas played in all 17 games a year ago with five starts.
 
• Paige Shannon: One of two team captains, Shannon is a veteran of 39 career games (the second most of any Rock player) who also has starting experience (14 games).
 
PORTAL SHOPPING
The only transfer in this year's recruiting class is former Division I goalkeeper Sam Black, who will be one of three goalies on this year's roster after coming to The Rock by way of Wagner College. Black played in nine games during her time with the Seahawks, making 44 saves (.647). Last season, the Fredericksburg, Virginia native made three appearances for Wagner while carrying a 1.76 Goals Against Average.

MALISHCHAK + EBERHART TO ROCK HALL OF FAME
Two former members of the Slippery Rock field hockey program were named to the SRU Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2026.
 
Vicki (Peterson) Eberhart and Gabrielle Malishchak will join five other former Slippery Rock greats as the latest members to join the SRU Athletics Hall of Fame when the 2026 class is enshrined Oct. 9.
 
In addition to being a two-time All-PSAC honoree in field hockey who still owns the single-season record for points per game, Eberhart was one of a rare group of athletes at Slippery Rock that not just participated in multiple sports, but excelled and earned numerous honors in multiple sports. She won two PSAC titles in the high jump and one PSAC title in the pole vault, was an All-American in the high jump.
 
Malishchak is the only four-time All-PSAC honoree in SRU field hockey history and the only first team All-American in program history. She still ranks fifth all-time at SRU in assists, played on an SRU team that reached as high as a No. 8 national ranking.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
• Frostburg state returns 19 athletes from last year's team that went 4-14 overall and 1-8 inside the PSAC.
 
• While FSU did lose second team All-PSAC honoree Paige Leitzel to graduation, the Bobcats do bring back the second, third and fourth leading point scorers from a season ago in Mikyla Rineer, Emma Price and Caroline Earnshaw. The trio combined to produce 13 of Frostburg State's 30 goals in 2025.
 
• To go with Price and Earnshaw, Frostburg also returns nine other athletes who had at least one point a season ago.
 
• In addition to losing Leitzel, Frostburg State head coach Kaitlin Thompson will also be tasked with replacing three-year starting goalkeeper Zoe Barnes. FSU has three goalkeepers on the roster in senior Ella Esham, sophomore Leah Maliszewski and freshman Jenna Yazzetti.
 
• Esham and Maliszewski have seen limited time backing up Barnes over the last few years, combining to play in 10 games.
