SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Winners of three straight games, the No. 9 Slippery Rock University field hockey team closes out its four-game homestand 4 p.m. Friday when it hosts Converse University at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SERIES HISTORY
Friday's game marks the third all-time meeting between The Rock and Valkyries. Converse took the inaugural game between the two, 2-1, in 2023 at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium before SRU evened the series with a 2-1 overtime victory on the road a season ago.
 
All three of the athletes involved in The Rock's goals in last season's victory are back for SRU. Hilary Hoffman scored the game's first goal late in the third quarter followed later by a Lucy Hutchinson game-winner in overtime that was set up by Roz Mikulak.

THE SEASON SO FAR
Slippery Rock has earned one of the best starts in program history on the back of consecutive home victories over Frostburg State (6-2), Coker (4-0) and a Lander team (3-1) that was ranked ninth in the country at the time of the contest.
 
WE'RE RANKED
The Rock's hot start to the 2026 season landed the program in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association top 10 poll this week for the first time since the 2017 season. This week's national coaches poll saw Slippery Rock slotted ninth in Division II.
 
ROCK RANKED HIGH IN OTHER METRICS
• In addition to its lofty national ranking, Slippery Rock is currently seventh in the nation in finalwhistlefh.com's Rating Percentage Index (RPI) (HERE).
 
• Slippery Rock is also sixth in the Atlantic Region's NCAA Power Index as presented by Inkblot Sports (HERE).
 
HOT START FUN FACTS

PUT THEM AWAY EARLY
Slippery Rock holds a +9-goal margin (9-0) in the first half of games this season. Not only has The Rock shutout their opponents in the first two quarters of all games in 2026, but they have also allowed just one shot all the while peppering the opponents cage with 33 attempts. All told, SRU ranks fifth in the country in total scoring margin (+3.33).
 
DANGEROUS OFFENSE
Slippery Rock has displayed a potent offensive attack through the early stages of the season that has resulted in SRU ranking fourth in the country in goals per game at 4.33 as well as being fifth in total points per game (11.33).
 
SRU is averaging 18.0 total shots per game, 12.0 shots on goal and 8.3 penalty corners per game.
 
The Rock's 13 goals on the year are the most by a SRU team in its first three games since 2018 (15).
 
SHUTDOWN DEFENSE
Through three games, Slippery Rock is allowing just 1.00 goals per game on 5.00 shots on goal per contest as well as conceding just 3.33 penalty corners per game: none of which have resulted in goals.
 
Leading The Rock's defense is goalkeeper Sam Black, who enters Friday having stopped six shots for a stellar .857 save percentage alongside a Goals Against Average of just 0.39. Haylie Sucharski has also made one defensive save.
 
Slippery Rock heads into the Converse game ranked 10th in the country in GAA and 12th in save percentage. Individually, Black is sixth in the nation in both GAA and save percentage.
 
The Rock's three goals allowed through three games are the fewest allowed by a Rock team in its first three games of a season since 2018 (2).
 
HUTCHINSON ON A HEATER
Few athletes in Division II have had better starts to their season than Lucy Hutchinson. Over three games, Hutchinson has accounted for 12 points on five goals and two assists while placing 11 of her 14 shots on goal.
 
The Norwich, England native has scored goals in each game this year, lifting her to second in the nation in both goals per game (1.67) and points per game (4.00). Hutchinson has already eclipsed her 2025 point total, which was a team season-high.
 
THREE IN A ROW FOR PIRAMO
Much like Hutchinson, Coral Piramo has also scored goals in all three games this season. Her goal total, coupled with one assist, gives her seven points on the year: the second highest total for SRU.
 
IT TAKES A VILLAGE
Slippery Rock's offensive success is hardly just a two-athlete show as six others have tallied at least one point on the season as well.
 
• Grace Williams is third on the team in points with five on two goals and one assist.
 
• Hilary Hoffman posted a pair of goals in The Rock's victory over Coker.
 
• Freshman Keila Schutte-Hanekom has one goal and one assist in her first three collegiate games.
 
• The trio of Roz Mikulak, Josie Shultz and Paige Shannon have all produced one assist.

CONSISTENCY IS KEY
Slippery Rock has used the same starting lineup of Black, Hutchinson, Williams, Hoffman, Schutte-Hanekom, Mikulak, Shultz, Sucharski, Riley Cloude, Brooke Page and Ava Masorti in all three of its games this year.
 
FAMILIARLY WITH CONVERSE
Prior to coming to The Rock, Masorti, who has become a key piece to The Rock's success with 15 starts over 20 games in the last two years, spent her freshman year at Converse. She logged 15 starts in her lone year at Converse.
 
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
63 of The Rock's 94 wins (67 percent) over the last 14 years have come at the friendly confines of Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
Dating back to the 2010 season, Slippery Rock holds a commanding 48-27 (.640) record in non-PSAC games. SRU went 4-4 in non-conference play last year and is 3-0 in 2026.

ROCK SELECTS CAPTAINS FOR 2026
Seniors Lucy Hutchinson and Paige Shannon were selected as team captains for the 2026, the SRU coaching staff recently announced.

MALISHCHAK + EBERHART TO ROCK HALL OF FAME
Two former members of the Slippery Rock field hockey program were named to the SRU Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2026.
 
Vicki (Peterson) Eberhart and Gabrielle Malishchak will join five other former Slippery Rock greats as the latest members to join the SRU Athletics Hall of Fame when the 2026 class is enshrined Oct. 9.
 
In addition to being a two-time All-PSAC honoree in field hockey who still owns the single-season record for points per game, Eberhart was one of a rare group of athletes at Slippery Rock that not just participated in multiple sports, but excelled and earned numerous honors in multiple sports. She won two PSAC titles in the high jump and one PSAC title in the pole vault, was an All-American in the high jump.
 
Malishchak is the only four-time All-PSAC honoree in SRU field hockey history and the only first team All-American in program history. She still ranks fifth all-time at SRU in assists, played on an SRU team that reached as high as a No. 8 national ranking.

SCOUTING CONVERSE
• Not only is Converse undefeated over its first two games of 2026, but it is also yet to allow a goal with back-to-back shutouts over Coker (5-0) and Wingate (1-0).
 
• Offensively, Edith Swaan paces CU with seven points on three goals and one assist. Ashley Shoffner, Broke Burgin and Vania Toranzo have all scored goals as well, while Sol Garcia Berros has assisted on two goals.
 
• Defensively, the Valkyries have allowed a mere five shots in their first two games, only one of which was on target and that was stopped by goalkeeper Alina Puentes.
 
• Converse head coach Morgan Downey, who is in her first year at CU after spending the past three seasons leading the Coker University program, has alternated the goalkeeping duo of Puentes and Camille Hordies by quarter to start the year.
 
• Puentes played every second in last year's loss to The Rock, making seven saves and giving up the two goals.
 
• Along with Puentes, five other starters CU starters in its 2025 game with The Rock are back for the Valkyries. Swaan came off the bench in the game and assisted on Converse's goal that was scored by Sage Pilarski, who transferred to Ball State over the summer.
 
UP NEXT
Slippery Rock hits the road for the first of five consecutive games away form Mihalik-Thompson Stadium 4 p.m. Sept. 18 at Roberts Wesleyan University. SRU defeated the Redhawks, 3-0, at home a season ago.
