SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University field hockey team will play two games in as many days when it hosts Coker University 2 p.m. Friday and No. 9 Lander University noon Saturday in non-conference action at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SERIES HISTORY
In the lone meeting to date between The Rock and Cobras, SRU earned a decisive 3-0 victory at home on Sept. 22, 2019. Abby McKay, Emily Polakovsky and Addy Ross all scored goals in the win. Hannah Nurse made four saves over three quarters to lead the defense in the shutout.
 
While no current Rock athlete played in the game, there are two familiar connections from the 2019 team to this year's squad: current Rock head coach Missy Revesz was an assistant coach in 2019 and Brooke Page's sister (Courtney) was a starter for SRU in the contest.

SERIES HISTORY
Lander earned a narrow 3-2 overtime win versus Slippery Rock a season ago in Greenwood, South Carolina in the first meeting between the two programs. The Rock held a 2-1 lead through 45 minutes and well into the fourth quarter, but a Bearcat goal in the 56th minute ultimately forced an overtime period that LU was able to cap off with a game-winning goal via a penalty stroke just over two minutes into extra time.
 
Lucy Hutchinson and Madison Shomo each scored goals for The Rock on assists from Hilary Hoffman and Roz Mikulak.
 
Seven starters and five reserves from last year's game are back for SRU in 2026. Lander brings back four athletes that started its 2025 meeting with The Rock as well as four who appeared in the contest as reserves, including Olivia Bond who converted the game-winning penalty stroke.

STRONG OPENING STATEMENT
Slippery Rock officially opened its 2026 season with a dominant 6-2 victory over Frostburg State University in non-conference competition Sept. 3 at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. SRU scored six unanswered goals over the first three quarters before FSU avoided the shutout with a pair of fourth-quarter goals.
 
• The Rock's goal production was tied for the second highest total in a season-opener with SRU's 6-1 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas in 2018. The Rock's highest season-opening goal total was 11 versus Washington & Jefferson in 2001.
 
• Overall, the six goals were the most inside the program since a 6-2 victory against D'Youville University during the 2024 season.
 
• SRU has now won three straight openers, which is tied for the longest streak for the program since winning five straight from 1985-89.
 
DYNAMIC DUO
Leading the way in The Rock's opening-week victory was Lucy Hutchinson and Grace Williams. The duo posted near identical stat lines of two goals, one assist and five total shots with the lone difference being all five of Williams' attempts being on target to Hutchinson's four.
 
The last time Slippery Rock had two multi-goal scorers in a game was in 2023 against Roberts Wesleyan College (Gianna Conti and Leslie Colliver). Williams' two-goal performance was the second of her career, she also scored twice a season ago against Roberts Wesleyan. Hutchinson's big game marked her first multi-score effort.
 
BENCH PRODUCTION
Fresh off a breakout sophomore season, Coral Piramo had a solid opening to her junior campaign with one goal off three shots as a reserve against Frostburg State. A year ago, the Huntington Beach, California native tallied five points on two goals and one assist over 17 appearances (14 starts).
 
QUICK STARTERS
Hutchinson and Piramo have now scored goals in each of The Rock's last two season-openers. In 2025, Hutchinson scored goals in four consecutive games to start the season.
 
GREAT FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The freshmen tandem of Keila Schutte-Hanekom and Josie Shultz enjoyed great starts to their collegiate careers against Frostburg State as Schutte-Hanekom scored one goal and collected one assist while Shultz collected her first career point as well with an assist.
 
Shultz and Schutte-Hanekom are the first Rock freshmen to score points in a SRU season-opener since Jessie Trube and Lauren Marks each tallied two goals in The Rock's 2018 opener versus St. Thomas Aquinas.

BLACK IMPRESSIVE IN DEBUT
Goalkeeper Sam Black, a fifth-year transfer from Wagner College, earned her first start in a Rock uniform against FSU. In addition to making a pair of saves, Black was exceptional at clearing several balls out of the circle before the Bobcats could get shots off. All told, Black did not allow a goal in 34:24 of playing time. Included in the two saves was a stop on a fourth-quarter FSU penalty stroke.
 
Backup goalie Leah Riegling, who started 11 games for SRU a season ago, came on for Black in the third quarter and made five saves to finish out the win.
 
SUCHARSKI WITH ANOTHER STOP
Senior Haylie Sucharski, who finished her junior year tied for the PSAC lead in defensive saves with four, picked up where she left off in 2025 with her first defensive save of the season against Frostburg State.
 
Sucharski's five career defensive saves are tied with Michelle Mumma (2003-06) and Holly Stiller (2018-21) for the eighth most in program history. Sucharski's next defensive save will move her into a tie with future SRU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Gabrielle Malishchak (2009-12) for seventh place.
 
CLEARING CORNERS
Not only did Slippery Rock yield just four penalty corners to Frostburg State, it successfully cleared the quartet of prime scoring opportunities. A season ago, SRU allowed 8.5 penalty corners per game and eight total goals off corners.
 
PEPPERING THE CAGE
The Rock's 23 total shots against Frostburg were the most in a single-game by a Rock team since a 25-shot game against D'Youville in 2024. Additionally, SRU's 16 shots on goal were also the most since 16 against D'Youville in 2024.
 
In addition to Hutchinson and Williams combining for nine shots on goal as well as Schutte-Hanekom and Piramo each producing a S.O.G. on their scores, the contingent of Hilary Hoffman (2), Riley Cloude (2) and Roz Mikulak (1) all chipped in attempts on target as well.
 
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
61 of The Rock's 92 wins (66.3 percent) over the last 14 years have come at the friendly confines of Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
Dating back to the 2010 season, Slippery Rock holds a commanding 46-27 (.630) record in non-PSAC games. SRU went 4-4 in non-conference play last year and is 1-0 in 2026 with its season-opening win over Frostburg State.
 
WINS vs. NATIONALLY RANKED TEAMS
Since the 2010 season, Slippery Rock has won nine games against nationally ranked teams. The Rock's previous wins against nationally ranked teams include victories against Kutztown (2017 / No. 5), West Chester (2017 / No. 3), East Stroudsburg (2014 / No. 5), Bloomsburg (2013 / No. 7), Indiana (2011 / No. 6, 2010 / No. 7, 2010 / No. 8) and LIU Post (2010 / No. 5).

MALISHCHAK + EBERHART TO ROCK HALL OF FAME
Two former members of the Slippery Rock field hockey program were named to the SRU Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2026.
 
Vicki (Peterson) Eberhart and Gabrielle Malishchak will join five other former Slippery Rock greats as the latest members to join the SRU Athletics Hall of Fame when the 2026 class is enshrined Oct. 9.
 
In addition to being a two-time All-PSAC honoree in field hockey who still owns the single-season record for points per game, Eberhart was one of a rare group of athletes at Slippery Rock that not just participated in multiple sports, but excelled and earned numerous honors in multiple sports. She won two PSAC titles in the high jump and one PSAC title in the pole vault, was an All-American in the high jump.
 
Malishchak is the only four-time All-PSAC honoree in SRU field hockey history and the only first team All-American in program history. She still ranks fifth all-time at SRU in assists, played on an SRU team that reached as high as a No. 8 national ranking.

EXTENDED STAY
Slippery Rock opens its 2026 with four straight home games. The four-game homestand is the longest inside the program since 2019 and tied for the fifth longest all-time at SRU.

SCOUTING THE COBRAS
• Coker opened its season with a pair of multi-goal defeats against Frostburg State (6-1) and Converse (5-0).
 
• Picked to finish sixth in the South Atlantic Conference preseason coaches' poll, the Cobras placed five athletes on the SAC's preseason players to watch list in Aleena Januchowski, Skylar Ponik, Kelcie Gannon, Angelina Belosio and Remi Morgan.
 
• Gannon was a third team All-SAC performer a season ago after making eight defensive saves. Januchowski and Ponik were tied for the Coker lead in points in 2025 (10). Belosio started 16 games at Converse prior to transferring to CU and Morgan is a freshman.
 
• Through two games this year, Belosio has scored the Cobra's lone goal on a Kiera Donnelly assist.
 
• Goalkeeper Kylie Campbell has played all but 15 minutes in the first two contests of the season for Coker, making 14 saves (.636) with a 4.57 Goals Against Average. Zahira Ferreyra started the FSU game, giving up three goals and making one save in a quarter of action.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
• Nationally ranked Lander, which travels to Frostburg State Friday prior to its game at The Rock, started its 2026 campaign with a narrow 1-0 loss to reining national champions Shippensburg. A third-quarter Raider goal was the lone difference.
 
• While the Bobcats managed just three shots versus the Raiders on attempts by Mickey Bond, Leira Van Tilburg and Avrie Arnfeldt, the Lander defense limited what is traditionally a high-scoring Shippensburg offense to one goal thanks to goalkeeper Avery Tworkoski stopping five shots and Mirte Van Roosebeke making a defensive save.
 
• Lander was positioned second in the SAC preseason coaches' poll.
 
• Representing the Bobcats on the SAC preseason players to watch list were returners Van Tilburg, Olivia Bond and Talia Packham as well as freshmen Arnfeld and Davyn Swindells.
 
• Olivia Bond led Lander last year in points (22) and goals (9) and Van Tilburg had eight points via two goals and four assists.
