Shawn Lutz is in his 31st overall year at The Rock and his 11th year (10th season) as head coach, where he owns a 97-25 record with 10 straight winning seasons, six PSAC West titles and six trips to the NCAA playoffs. Lutz was the PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2018, 2019 and 2023 and was the Don Hansen Football Gazette Division II National Coach of the Year in 2019. The 97 wins are the most among all PSAC West head coaches since the 2016 season. Lutz was an assistant at SRU for 20 years before taking over the program in 2016. He has been a member of the coaching staff for 14 of SRU's 21 PSAC West titles. Lutz played tight end at West Virginia University, graduating in 1996, and earned a master's degree from SRU in 2003.
Â

Â
NATIONAL RANKINGS
Slippery Rock moved up one spot to No. 6 in the AFCA Division II national poll and No. 7 in the D2football.com poll this week. Both polls are available on page nine of the PDF notes linked above. The Rock were also ranked No. 2 in the NCAA NPI computer rankings this week. More info on NPI available
HERE.
Â
NO. 2 IN NCAA NPI RANKINGSÂ |Â NPI Rankings
The NCAA Power Index (NPI) debuted this year in Division II. The NPI will be used to determine the national tournament fields moving forward, replacing the ranking committees. The NPI assigns a point value to each game and rewards teams for their winning percentage and strength of schedule. Slippery Rock is currently ranked No. 2 among all programs in Division II this week and No. 1 in Super Region One.
Â
NATIONAL NPIÂ |Â NPI Rankings
Slippery Rock was No. 1 in each of the first two rankings but was overtaken by Ferris State this week after the Bulldogs earned a win over previously unbeaten Davenport. FSU is No. 1 with an NPI score of 70.007 as the only team in the country to top 70 in the ratings. Slippery Rock is No. 2 at 69.179 with a cushion of more than two points over No. 3 Harding (67.031). The rest of the top five includes No. 4 Northwood (65.681) and No. 5 Colorado State Pueblo (64.918). The top 10 is rounded out by Minnesota State (64.292), East Stroudsburg (63.794), Northwest Missouri State (63.326), Emporia State (62.884) and Kentucky State (61.834).
Â
SUPER REGION ONE RANKINGS
The current Super Region One top 10 rankings include Slippery Rock leading the way, followed by East Stroudsburg, Kutztown, Virginia Union and Johnson C. Smith rounding out the top five. Virginia State is sixth in the region, followed by California (Pa.), Indiana (Pa.), Bloomsburg and Fayetteville State rounding out the top 10.
Â
7 UNBEATENS LEFT
Slippery Rock enters this weekend as one of just seven teams in Division II that is still unbeaten on the year and as the only Super Region One team that is undefeated. The other undefeated teams are Colorado State Pueblo, Ferris State, Harding, Minnesota State, Northwood and Western Colorado. All seven teams are 9-0 entering this week.
Â
BACK IN THE TOP 10
Slippery Rock is ranked inside the top 10 for the seventh straight year and the 10th time in the last 11 seasons.
Â
STREAKING IN THE POLLS
Slippery Rock has been ranked or at least receiving votes in every AFCA national poll released since Oct. 8, 2018, a streak of more than 2,940 straight days.
Â
9-0 TO START THE YEAR
Slippery Rock is 9-0 for the first time since the 2023 season and is looking for its third 10-0 start in the last six seasons and just its third 10-0 start in program history. The Rock won their first 10 games of the 2023 season and their first 13 games in 2019 to set the program's single-season winning streak record. Prior to that, SRU hadn't reached 9-0 to open a season since finishing the 1924 season with a 9-0 mark.
Â
BEST OF THE WEST
Slippery Rock has won its first PSAC West title since 2023 and its 10th divisional crown since 2011. The Rock have now won the PSAC West 21 times. SRU had a rare down year in 2025 with a 3-3 divisional record, but has lost just three total divisional games in the other seven years combined dating back to 2018. The Rock are 47-6 in the PSAC West since 2018 and are trying to complete their fourth undefeated divisional season in that stretch. This season marks the seventh time in the last eight seasons that SRU will finish PSAC West play with one or fewer losses.
Â
PSAC CHAMP GAME IS SET
There is no PSAC drama this week in terms of deciding next week's title game participants. Slippery Rock locked up the West with two games to go in divisional play and East Stroudsburg locked up the East last week with an OT win at home over previously unbeaten Kutztown. It marked the first regional loss for Kutztown since SRU beat the Golden Bears in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Playoffs. The Rock will host ESU in the PSAC title game Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. The teams met earlier this season back on Sept. 12 with SRU posting a 59-35 road win.
Â
HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
Rock football teams have compiled a 203-71 (.741) record in 51+ seasons at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium (formerly known as N. Kerr Thompson Stadium). The Rock own a 103-26 (.798) home record since artificial turf was installed in the summer of 2003 and are 99-20 (.832) in home games since 2005. The numbers get even better in recent years, as The Rock are 81-11 (.880) at home since the beginning of the 2010 season and 69-8 (.896) since the beginning of the 2013 season. SRU is 51-8 (.864) at home under
Shawn Lutz and has never lost more than one home game in a season under Lutz.
Â
LATE SEASON NIGHT GAME
Slippery Rock will play under the lights this week in a rare November night game. The later kick was required due to SRU field hockey hosting a mandated PSAC game earlier in the day. This will mark the fourth home night game this season for SRU, which also hosted Minnesota Duluth, Seton Hill and Gannon under the lights earlier this fall.
Â
TURN THE LIGHTS ON
Slippery Rock will play five games start at 4 p.m. or later this fall. SRU had a streak of 37 straight night game wins snapped with a loss to California (Pa.) last year, but maintains an incredible record when the lights are on. The Rock are 41-1 in their last 42 games that started at 4 p.m. or later, including 4-0 this year. SRU is 51-10 in home night games since lights were installed at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium in 2003.
Â
17TH STRAIGHT WINNING SEASON
Slippery Rock is already guaranteed to finish with a winning season this fall, extending its current streak of winning seasons to 17 straight years. The Rock entered this year ranked ninth among all Division II programs for the longest active winning seasons streak in the country. The only other program in the PSAC with more consecutive winning seasons currently is California (Pa.), which has already extended its streak to 22 straight seasons. Â
Â
LUTZ UP TO 11TH ON PSAC WINS LIST
SRU head coach
Shawn Lutz won his 97th game at The Rock last week, which is No. 11 on the all-time PSAC head football coaching wins ledger. Lutz is five wins shy of cracking the PSAC all-time top 10 wins list, which includes just 10 other men to ever record 100 wins in the conference.
