About the NPI
Â
INDIANAPOLIS – The Slippery Rock University football team stayed No. 1 in Super Region One and slid one spot to No. 2 nationally when the NCAA Division II NPI Rankings were updated Sunday morning.
Â
The NCAA Power Index (NPI) is the new ranking system that will be used to determine postseason fields in Division II in 2026-27, replacing the ranking committees and former criteria. The NPI ranks all programs in the division and will replace the regional rankings announcements from previous years. The data can be sorted by region to determine the regional rankings. Each sport committee was responsible for determining the criteria and setting the "dials" for their respective sport. More info on NPI is available
HERE.
Â
NPI evaluates a team's season by considering both results and the strength of the teams it plays. Each contest produces a value based on whether the team won, lost or tied and the opponent's NPI. The NPI rating is dynamic, changing each week with the results of all games.
Â
Slippery Rock was No. 1 in each of the first two rankings but was overtaken by Ferris State this week after the Bulldogs earned a win over previously unbeaten Davenport. FSU is No. 1 with an NPI score of 70.007 as the only team in the country to top 70 in the ratings. Slippery Rock is No. 2 at 69.179 with a cushion of more than two points over No. 3 Harding (67.031). The rest of the top five includes No. 4 Northwood (65.681) and No. 5 Colorado State Pueblo (64.918).
Â
The top 10 is rounded out by Minnesota State (64.292), East Stroudsburg (63.794), Northwest Missouri State (63.326), Emporia State (62.884) and Kentucky State (61.834).
Â
The Rock are rewarded in the metrics for owning a perfect 9-0 overall record and for a road win over current No. 7 East Stroudsburg, a home win over No. 22 Minnesota Duluth and road wins over no. 37 California (Pa.) and No. 41 Indiana (Pa.).
Â
The current Super Region One top 10 rankings include Slippery Rock leading the way, followed by East Stroudsburg, Kutztown, Virginia Union and Johnson C. Smith rounding out the top five. Virginia State is sixth in the region, followed by California (Pa.), Indiana (Pa.), Bloomsburg and Fayetteville State rounding out the top 10.
Â
Super Region One includes all schools in the PSAC, the Mountain East Conference, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and the Northeast 10 Conference.
Â
The Rock will look to keep their position atop the rankings with a 4 p.m. game at home against Edinboro Saturday.
Â
The NPI will be updated each Sunday for the rest of the season until the NCAA Selection Show Sunday, Nov. 15, The final rankings will not be posted publicly on Nov. 15 until after the Selection Show.
