Pennington named field hockey assistant coach

Alex Pennington has been hired as an assistant coach for the Slippery Rock field hockey program, head coach Missy Revesz announced Thursday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Alex Pennington has joined the Slippery Rock University field hockey program as an assistant coach, head coach Missy Revesz announced Thursday.

"I'm thrilled to have Alex at The Rock," said Revesz. "She brings the perfect mix of energy, coaching expertise, past success and core values that I'm confident will help guide our program in the right direction."

Pennington brings a wealth of successful coaching experience from both the Division I and II levels with her to The Rock. While assisting with all facets of the game at each of her previous stops, Pennington has primarily lent her expertise to defense and in particular working with goalkeepers.

Most recently, Pennington spent three seasons at Division I Bucknell University where she helped to guide the Bison to three Patriot League Tournament appearances, 21 victories and a .404 winning percentage. Bucknell ranked third in the Patriot League in Goals Against Average in each of the last two seasons. Under Pennington's guidance Bucknell goalkeeper Sarah Althouse earned All-Patriot League honors as a sophomore in 2024.

Prior to her arrival at Bucknell, Pennington spent one year at Shippensburg where she was a member of a Red Raider coaching staff that led Shippensburg to the 2021 NCAA Division II National Championship after posting a perfect 20-0 record. Pennington oversaw Shippensburg's goalkeepers and defense.

SU led the nation in GAA (0.60) and total shutouts (12) with no opponent scoring more than one goal on Shippensburg during its championship run. Defenders Caitlyn Wink and Tori Albright garnered All-America honors while Wink was named the PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Year and Lindsay Tripodo was tabbed a second team All-PSAC choice as a freshman goalie.

Pennington's first gained collegiate coaching experience as a graduate assistant at Coker University for two seasons. She helped to lead Coker to a 16-9 record over her two years in Hartsville, South Carolina with one South Atlantic Conference title.

In addition to her collegiate coaching experience, Pennington has also served as the Central Penn Field Hockey Club's head goalkeeping coach (2021-22).

Before embarking on a career in coaching, Pennington played for four seasons (2015-18) at Ohio University. Pennington started 33 of 45 career games played for the Bobcats prior to graduating with a bachelor's degree in athletic training and a minor in applied nutrition.

A native of Easton, Pennsylvania, Pennington officially began her new role at SRU this week.

The Slippery Rock field hockey team opens its 2025 season 1 p.m. Sept. 4 against Adelphi University at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
