COACHING MATCHUP
Slippery Rock head coach Shawn Lutz is in his 29th overall year at The Rock and his ninth year (eighth season) as head coach, where he owns a 73-19 record with five PSAC West titles and five trips to the NCAA playoffs. Lutz was the PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2018, 2019 and 2023 and was the Don Hansen Football Gazette Division II National Coach of the Year in 2019. The 73 wins are the most among all PSAC head coaches since the 2016 season. Lutz was an assistant at SRU for 20 years before taking over the program in 2016. He has been a member of the coaching staff for 13 of SRU's 20 PSAC West titles. Lutz played tight end at West Virginia University, graduating in 1996, and earned a master's degree in sport management from SRU in 2003.

Jake Nulph is in his fourth season as the head coach at Edinboro, where he owns an overall record of 13-23 for a .361 winning percentage. Nulph's best record was his second season at Edinboro in 2022 when the team went 5-6 with five All-PSAC honorees. Nulph came to Edinboro after spending one year at Indiana (Pa.) as a defensive backs and special teams coach in 2019. Prior to that, he worked assistant coaching stints at Duquesne, Westminster (Pa.), Saint Francis, Allegheny and Robert Morris. He is a 2005 graduate from Robert Morris.

NATIONAL RANKINGS
Slippery Rock held steady at No. 9 in the AFCA Division II national rankings this week. The Rock also held steady at No. 10 in the D2football.com national poll this week. Both DII national polls are available on page nine of the PDF linked above.

EDINBORO QUICK HITS
• Edinboro was picked sixth in the PSAC West in the preseason coaches poll.
• The Scots are 1-3 overall with the one win being a 23-21 road win at FCS school Robert Morris in week two. Edinboro is 0-3 against Division II teams, but has played a tough schedule that included two of the four 3-0 PSAC teams so far in East Stroudsburg (24-12 loss) and No. 8 Kutztown (26-0 loss).
• The offense averages 15.5 points and 266.5 yards per game with 206.5 passing yards and 60.0 rushing yards per game. Opponents average 25.8 points and 308.3 yards per game with 138.3 rushing yards and 170 passing yards per game.
• Punter Reed Martin also has starting experience in the defensive secondary. Martin is an All-American punter that is averaging 42.21 yards per punt with five kicks over 50 yards and a season-long of 74 yards.
• QB Isaac Bernard is completing 68.1 percent of his passes for 781 yards with five TD and five INT. Teagan Brown has been the top target with 30 catches for 243 yards and one TD. Jerry Dinkins III leads the running backs with 113 yards and also ranks second in receiving with 15 grabs for 100 yards. He is also the top kick returner and leads the team with 86.75 all-purpose yards per game.
• Wilfredo Diaz leads the defense with 59 tackles through four games, which is 38 more than the next-highest total on the team (CJ Waldier with 21 tackles). Diaz is averaging 14.75 tackles per game.
• SRU alumnus and former All-PSAC defensive tackle Tony Papley is Edinboro's defensive coordinator. Former SRU defensive lineman Carson Picheco is the defensive line coach at Edinboro.

SRU IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS

SRU has been ranked in every national poll since the final poll of the 2018 season was released. This week's game will be the 57th straight game SRU plays as a ranked team. The Rock have appeared in the top 10 in the national rankings for at least one week in each of the last five seasons and have earned a top 10 ranking in seven of the last eight complete seasons.

LAST MEETING WITH EDINBORO - NOV. 4, 2023
No. 5 Slippery Rock put up 670 yards of offense and did not punt once on the way to a 56-18 win at Edinboro in week 10 last year. Brayden Long was 23-of-27 for 400 yards with five TD and no INT. Cohen Russell had 180 receiving yards and three TD and Kyle Sheets had 104 receiving yards and one TD. Six different SRU players scored in the game. Edinboro put up 319 yards of total offense with Isaac Bernard completing 21-of-33 passes for 231 yards with two TD and one INT. Brian Trobel rushed for 40 yards and Amani Bailey caught six passes for 85 yards.

LAST WEEK FOR EDINBORO

Edinboro took a 27-26 lead with 1:12 to play before Bloomsburg went 75 yards in 38 seconds to score the game-winning touchdown to defeat the Fighting Scots 32-27 in Edinboro. The Scots finished with a 392-370 edge in total offense with 352 passing yards and 40 rushing yards while Bloomsburg threw for 287 yards and ran for 83 yards. Isaac Bernard completed 30-of-46 passes for 339 yards with three TD and one INT. Teagan Brown caught six passes for 84 yards. Evan Low and Isaiah Grier each had one TD grab and Gage Galuska blocked two punts and recovered one for a touchdown.

LAST WEEK FOR SLIPPERY ROCK
SRU scored 33 unanswered points to post a 33-7 road win at Shippensburg. The Rock limited the Raiders to just 15 total yards in the second half and 135 total yards in the game while racking up 408 yards of offense with 268 passing yards and 140 rushing yards. Idris Lawrence ran for 72 yards and one TD while averaging 8.0 yards per carry. Chris D'Or added 63 rushing yards and 30 receiving yards. Brayden Long threw for 268 yards with one TD, no INT and one rushing TD. Tony Grimes had career-highs of seven catches for 76 yards. Todd Hill and Munchie Johnson combined for 7.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks and one safety and Pooh Lawton and Donnell Henriquez each had an interception.

HILL NAMED ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
DE Todd Hill was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week after tallying 4.5 TFL, 2.0 sacks, six tackles and one safety in the win at Shippensburg last week.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
Rock football teams have compiled a 190-70 (.731) record in the 50 seasons (including this one) in games played at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium (formerly known as N. Kerr Thompson Stadium). The Rock own a 90-25 (.783) home record since artificial turf was installed in the summer of 2003 and are 86-19 (.819) in home games since 2005. The numbers get even better in recent years, as The Rock are 68-10 (.872) at home since the beginning of the 2010 season and 55-7 (.887) since the beginning of the 2013 season.

WE LOVE NIGHT GAMES
The Rock have won their last 32 consecutive games that started at 4 p.m. or later and have not lost an evening game at home or on the road since Sept. 29, 2012.

HOME NIGHT GAMES
SRU has been nearly impossible to beat at home in night games over the last 15 years, posting a 34-1 record since 2010 and winning its last 26 straight home night games. Since SRU installed lights in 2003, the program has posted a 45-9 overall record at home under the lights. The last time SRU lost a home night game was a 56-49 defeat against Kutztown on Sept. 29, 2012.

PSAC WEST OPENER
The Rock have won their PSAC West opener in each of the last seven years and haven't lost the first divisional game of the season since a 41-38 upset loss at Seton Hill in 2015. SRU would run the table the rest of the regular season in 2015 after that loss and went on to win the 2015 PSAC title.

KINGS OF THE WEST
Slippery Rock is looking to defend its five straight PSAC West titles and begins that quest this week. SRU has lost just two PSAC Western Division games since Oct. 21, 2017 and is 35-2 against the Division since then, including 33-2 in the last five full seasons that all resulted in PSAC West titles. The Rock have won or at least shared nine of the 12 PSAC West titles dating back to 2011, easily leading all programs in the Division. SRU head coach Shawn Lutz is 38-4 against the PSAC West in the last six seasons and 41-8 against the Division in his career as head coach.

17-0 IN VILLAGE FEST GAMES
Saturday's game is the nightcap to the 21st annual Slippery Rock VillageFest, an all-day festival that will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Slippery Rock. The Rock have been exceptional at closing out the VillageFest on a positive note and have won all 17 home games played on VillageFest for a 17-0 record dating back to 2006. The first three VillageFest events from 2003-05 did not occur in conjunction with SRU game days. Since 2006, the event has included an SRU home football game.

15 STRAIGHT WHITE OUT WINS

This week's game will serve as the 17th Annual White Out game for The Rock football team. The tradition, launched during the 2007 season, asks fans to wear white to one night game each fall. Official shirts are sold by the SGA Bookstore for just $5. The Rock have won 15 straight White Out games with the only loss in the White Out game coming in the inaugural event, a 34-31 defeat to Indiana (Pa.) in 2007.

10 OR LESS POINTS THREE WEEKS IN A ROW
Slippery Rock's defense has limited all three opponents this year to 10 points or less, including two teams that made the NCAA Playoffs last year. The Rock held New Haven to seven points in the opener. Since then, New Haven has scored 92 points over its next two games for an average of 46.0 points per game in weeks two and three. SRU held Shepherd to 10 points on the road in week two. The Rams are averaging 25.0 points per game in their other two games. The last time Slippery Rock limited three straight opponents to 10 points or fewer was weeks 2-4 of the 2007 season against Millersville (21-5), Bowie State (35-7) and Kutztown (45-9). SRU's 8.0 points per game allowed this season is the sixth best scoring defense in Division II.

MUNCHIE KEEPS GETTING BETTER
DT Munchie Johnson has started 42 straight games for The Rock and he seems to be getting better with age. Coming off a career year in 2023, Johnson added some bulk in the offseason and is off to a hot start again this fall. With 3.0 tackles for loss last week, he now has 30.5 tackles for loss during his career. It's rare for a defensive tackle to lead the team in total tackles, but through three weeks, Munchie has done just that, leading SRU with 17 total tackles, including 10 solo.

TODD HILL LEADING THE PSAC
DE Todd Hill is showing why he was a three-time All-Conference selection at Duquesne before transferring to Pitt last year. The grad student made the move from linebacker to defensive end and has been a menace for opposing offenses through three games. He leads all players in the PSAC with an average of 2.5 tackles for loss per game and is coming off a PSAC Athlete of the Week performance last week at Shippensburg, when he had 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and one safety. Hill has 16 total tackles and leads the team with 11 solo stops, 7.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks and three QB hurries.

DEFENSIVE LINE CONTROLLING GAMES
DE Todd Hill and DT Munchie Johnson have combined for a 10.5 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks in three games this year. In total, The Rock's defense have racked up 20 tackles for loss (6.7 per game) and six sacks (2.0 per game) through three games. Last fall, SRU averaged 5.3 tackles for loss and just 1.1 sacks per game.

LONG CLOSING IN ON MILESTONES
QB Brayden Long is closing in on some significant milestones despite only being the starting QB for a little over one full season. He needs just four more completions to become the fourth player in SRU history with 400 career completions. He is 274 yards of total offense away from becoming the fifth player in SRU history with 5,000 total yards of offense and he is 389 passing yards away from becoming the fifth player in SRU history with 5,000 passing yards. Last week, Long threw his 40th career TD pass to become just the seventh QB in program history with 40 TD passes.

LONG NAMED SEMIFINALIST FOR CAMPBELL TROPHY
QB Brayden Long was announced this week as one of 18 Division II players to be named a national semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, known as the "Academic Heisman." Long is one of three semifinalists of the 203 total players from all levels with a perfect 4.0 GPA. The Campbell Trophy is the highest academic honor in collegiate football and is presented ini Las Vegas in December by the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. More info available HERE.

"LONG" LIST OF AWARDS
QB Brayden Long has racked up a long list of honors both on the field and in the classroom. He was the PSAC West and Super Region One Offensive Athlete of the Year, a Don Hansen All-American and a national finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, finishing fifth in the final voting for the Division II Player of the Year last year. Long was the PSAC Champion Scholar Award winner for owning the highest GPA of all players in the PSAC title game, becoming the only player in PSAC history to be a Champion Scholar and an Athlete of the Year. He was also one of only two QBs in Division II to earn Academic All-America honors and closed his year by earning the NCAA Division II 50th Anniversary Scholarship and being named the overall PSAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He then picked up the Atlantic Region Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award from the D2CCA, becoming the only football player in the country to be one of the eight regional award winners. Long graduated in May with a perfect 4.0 GPA after earning a degree in sport management with a minor in leadership.

LONG BY THE NUMBERS
Brayden Long is 15-3 as The Rock's starting QB and is the most accurate passer in program history, completing 68 percent of his passes (396-of-585) for 4,611 yards with 40 touchdowns and just six interceptions on 585 attempts. His 396 completions are the fourth most in program history at SRU, while his 4,611 yards rank No. 8 all-time at SRU and his 40 TD passes rank No. 6. Those lofty numbers have come in just 18 starts for Long. All three of the losses in Long's starting career have come against Kutztown. He is 15-0 in every other game he has started.

LAWRENCE THIRD AMONG ALL D2 BACKS
RB Idris Lawrence enters this game with 3,267 career rushing yards, which ranks third among all active players in Division II and first among all active players in Super Region One. Lawrence is averaging 99.0 rushing yards per game over 33 career games, which ranks fifth among all players in Division II.

D'OR GOES OVER 2,000 YARDS
RB Chris D'Or became just the 18th player in SRU history to reach 2,000 rushing yards in a career earlier this season and comes into this week with 2,084 rushing yards and 3,174 carer all-purpose yards.

TWO-HEADED MONSTER
Slippery Rock's running back duo of Chris D'Or and Idris Lawrence have combined for 434 rushing yards and 81 receiving yards through the first three weeks, accounting for 171.7 yards of offense per game. Lawrence is averaging 6.3 yards per carry on 33 touches with D'Or averaging 4.6 yards per carry on 49 touches. They both rank in the top 14 among all active Division II players in career yards per carry with Lawrence averaging 5.8 yards per carry his career to rank 10th in the country and D'Or averaging 5.5 yards per carry to rank 14th. Combined, they have rushed for 5,351 career yards at the Division II level.

KRUZELYAK PASS CATCHING STREAK

TE Kam Kruzelyak has caught at least one pass in 15 straight games and has multiple catches in 13 straight games. He ranked third on the team in catches with 46 grabs for 465 yards in 2023 and is second on the team with eight catches for 76 yards and one score this year.

BIG PLAY MIKE
WR Mike Solomon has caught five passes for 103 yards with two touchdowns and is averaging 20.6 yards per reception. He has the longest catch of the year (38 yards) and is the only player on the SRU roster with two receiving scores with one TD against New Haven and another against Shippensburg.

KICK IT TO KYLON
With 118 return yards on three returns last week, sophomore Kylon Wilson became the eighth player in SRU history with 1,000 or more kickoff return yards. In less than two seasons, Wilson is already up to No. 8 all-time at SRU with 1,028 return yards on just 35 kick returns. His 29.4 yards per return ranks No. 2 among all active players in Division II and No. 3 all-time at SRU.

WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLE
The Rock have turned the ball over just once through three weeks with a lost fumble in the second half of the opener against New Haven. SRU is one of just two teams in the PSAC to not throw an interception yet this year (SRU and Kutztown). Slippery Rock is +7 overall and ranks fifth in the nation in turnover margin at +2.33 per game. The Rock are third in the nation in turnovers lost (1) and 14th in the nation in turnovers gained (8) with five interceptions, three fumble recoveries, one defensive touchdown and one safety.

HOLDING ONTO THE BALL

Slippery Rock has been known for years for a quick-strike, high-powered offense. The Rock have shown through the first three weeks this fall that they can also slow things down and grind on opposing defenses. SRU held the ball for more than 39 minutes at Shepherd and has racked up at least 30 minutes of possession time in all three games. SRU enters this week ranked 12th in Division II in time of possession, holding the ball for 33:50 on average.

INJURY BUG BITES EARLY IN 2024
Slippery Rock has battled the injury bug early in this season with at least four projected starters missing time. On the offensive side of the ball, SRU has played its first three games without its top returning receiver, 6-foot-4 outside threat Logan Ramper. Defensively, The Rock were without starting linebacker Andrew Vince for each of the first two games and have been without two starting defensive linemen the last two weeks as Daniel Tooson and Brian Young Jr. did not play. Vince returned to action last week and got some limited reps. Ramper is expected to dress this week for the first time. Tooson is tracking for a return in the coming weeks.

BROWN GETS FIRST START
With the injuries on the defensive side of the ball, SRU has had a number of players step up on the way to a 3-0 start. Last week DE John Brown earned his first start at SRU and played well enough to earn a second one this week. Brown finished with six tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss and a half-sack in his first extended minutes at SRU.

SECONDARY MAKING PLAYS
SRU has two All-Americans in the secondary with cornerback Josh Stokes and safety Eddie Faulkner IV. Those two have combined with Michael Henwood, Ali Abdul-Hakim, Pooh Lawton and Donnell Henriquez to force seven of the eight opposing turnovers through three weeks. Henwood has two picks and two pass breakups, Abdul-Hakim has one pick, Faulkner has two pass breakups, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries, Lawton has one forced fumble and one INT, Henriquez has one INT and Stokes has a team-high four pass breakups to go with 15 total tackles.

PLACEKICKING GAME
Redshirt freshman Jake Mullins took over as placekicker midway through week one and was perfect for two weeks, going 3-for-3 on field goals and 3-for-3 on PAT kicks. He missed his first two kicks last week, both field goal attempts inside the red zone, before booting a 23-yarder later in the game. Mullins is now 4-for-6 on FG attempts as SRU has doubled up its field goals from last fall when the team went just 2-of-5 on FG attempts over 14 games.

FLIPPING THE FIELD
Punter Mason Yohn is off to a strong start in the punting game this fall, averaging 40.7 yards per punt on 13 kicks with seven punts inside the 20-yard line, four fair catches and one touchback. He has two kicks over 50 yards, including a career-long 57-yard punt against Shepherd.

CAPTAINS
SRU has named six captains for the 2024 season with two on offense, three on defense and one on special teams. The offensive captains are QB Brayden Long and TE Kam Kruzelyak. The defensive captains are DT Munchie Johnson, DB Eddie Faulkner IV and DB Josh Stokes. The special teams captain is LS Josh George. Long, Kruzelyak and Johnson are all two-time captains after serving as captains in 2022 as well.

PRESEASON RECOGNITION
Slippery Rock was ranked No. 10 in the Lindy's Sports preseason poll that was released earlier this summer. The Rock had three individual players mentioned in that publication with tight end Kam Kruzelyak and cornerback Josh Stokes being named preseason All-Americans and Notre Dame (Ohio) transfer running back Idris Lawrence being named the "Newcomer of the Year." SRU also led all schools in the region with four players named to the D2football.com Elite 100 Watch List with QB Brayden Long, RB Idris Lawrence, WR Rashawn Harvey and DB Josh Stokes earning recognition.

PLAYOFF STAPLES
Slippery Rock has reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs in each of the last five seasons and has made a playoff appearance in eight of the last 10 seasons. The Rock reached the NCAA quarterfinals in 2018, made the national semifinals in 2019, reached the first round in 2021, made the second round in 2022 and reached the quarterfinals in 2023. Slippery Rock's current streak of five straight trips to the playoffs is tied with Colorado School of Mines for the second-longest active streak among all Division II programs, trailing only Ferris State (9) for the longest active playoff streak in the country.

WINNING SEASONS STREAK
Slippery Rock has put together a winning season in each of the last 14 years, which ranks ninth among all Division II programs for the longest active winning seasons streak in the country. The only other program in the PSAC with more consecutive winning seasons currently is California (Pa.), which has strung together 19 winning seasons entering 2024.

WE'VE PLAYED A LOT OF FOOTBALL
Slippery Rock has played 70 games since the beginning of the 2018 season, which is the most games played among all Super Region One schools. The Rock are averaging an impressive 11.0 wins per year over the last five full seasons.

UP NEXT
Slippery Rock hits the road for the third time in five weeks and travels to rival No. 25 Indiana (Pa.) for an early season meeting between the two ranked teams in the PSAC West next Saturday, Oct. 5. The game, which is Indiana's Homecoming, is set for a 2 p.m. kickoff. Slippery Rock then returns home the following week for its own Homecoming and hosts Gannon Oct. 12 at 1 p.m.
