BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's track & field team won its seventh indoor title at the 2024 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Indoor Championships that wrapped up Monday evening from Lehigh University.
Â
The Rock scored points in 16 of the 17 events that were contested over the two-day competition and pulled away down the stretch to finish with a score of 136 points. Last year's champion, Shippensburg, took second with 106 points. Seton Hill finished a distant third with 58 points, followed by California (Pa.) in fourth with 57.5 points and East Stroudsburg in fifth with 56.5 points to round out the top five. A total of 15 teams recorded points in the competition.
Â
The victory completes a calendar sweep for Slippery Rock, which has won the most recent PSAC titles in cross country (2023), indoor (2023-24) and outdoor track & field (2023). The Rock also picked up the PSAC Champion Scholar award Monday when
Regan Johnson was recognized for owning the highest GPA of all female athletes competing at the meet. SRU has swept each of the three PSAC Champion Scholar awards in the last year with
Tiffany Jolayemi winning outdoor,
Steph Keelon winning cross country and now Johnson picking up the indoor award.
Â
"I'm really proud of our athletes and our coaches," said head coach
Bill Jordan. "We scored in almost every single event over the two days, and we exceeded our expectations in a lot of areas. The athletes really wanted to win this meet and they went out and executed the plan perfectly. It's a testament to the caliber of student-athletes and coaches we have to win outdoor, cross country and indoor back-to-back like this."
Â
The headliner for Slippery Rock over the two days of action was distance standout
Anna Igims, who cemented her legacy as one of the best to pull on the green and white by putting together one of the most dominant meets possible. She won the mile and the 3,000-meter run Monday after winning the 5,000-meter run and anchoring the distance medley relay to a win Sunday. In total, she raced 6.97 miles and ran 56 laps over two days, contributing 40 points to the team score. Her point total exceeded eight teams in the final standings. For that effort, she was named the Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet and the Overall Outstanding Athlete of the Meet after voting by the league's head coaches.
Â
Igims wasn't the only SRU athlete to pick up a win Monday as
Sarah Corrie scored her third PSAC title in the shot put and picked up her second straight win at the indoor championships. She led a trio of SRU athletes to top four finishes in the shot put as The Rock scored 21 points in the event to pick up a huge boost on the final day of action. Corrie won the event with a toss of 13.90 meters.
Becca Martin also earned All-PSAC honors in third place with a throw of 13.02 meters and
Olivia Heckman was fourth with a toss of 12.83 meters.
Â
