SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's outdoor track and field team sits third in the team standings after the second day of competition at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships wrapped up Friday evening from SRU's William Lennox Track.
Â
The 13-time defending champions from Shippensburg have built a commanding lead going into the final day of competition and sit first with 80 points. East Stroudsburg is second with 38.5 points, followed by Slippery Rock in third with 31 points. California (Pa.) is fourth with 27 points and Lock Haven sits fifth with 24 points.
Â
Five event finals were contested Friday to leave 14 total event finals left to be decided Saturday on the last day of action. The other events Friday were preliminary rounds on the track to set up Saturday finals.
Â
The highlight of the day for Slippery Rock came in one of those prelims when
AJ Virata blazed to an all-time PSAC record in the 200-meter dash. He broke the SRU record and ran the fastest time in PSAC history to win his heat in 20.97 seconds. It topped the former SRU record of 21.05 seconds that was set by George Crunkleton all the way back in 1979 when Crunkleton won the NCAA Division III national title in the event. It was tied for the oldest record in SRU men's track and field history, leaving Don Johns' 400-meter hurdle record from 1979 now as the oldest record for the program. Virata also broke the PSAC's all-time and championship record of 21.01 seconds that was set by Dru Adighibe in 2016 and matched by Jae'Len Means in 2019.
Â
Virata's 200m performance was his third race of the day. He also posted the top qualifying time in the 100-meter dash with a career-best 10.54 seconds and ran a leg of the No. 2 qualifying 4x100-meter relay, where he teamed with
Kadin Johnson,
Matthew Crow and
Kanye Thompson to run a season-best time of 40.97 seconds. Thompson will join Virata in the 100m finals Saturday after running the third best prelim time with a season-best of 10.61 seconds.
Â
The Rock got one All-PSAC (top three) finish Saturday from
Dan Hyatt with a second place finish in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.72 meters.
Jakob Graff took sixth at 4.42 meters to give SRU 11 points in the event.
Â
Bryan Dworek picked up three points with a sixth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 7.09 meters despite not practicing for most of the last month while dealing with a foot injury.
Â
SRU got four points from
Gavin Thomas with a fifth place finish in the decathlon with a score of 6,034 points and rounded out its points on the day with two points from
Joshua Gose, who was seventh in the discus with a throw of 45.43 meters.
Â
In addition to Virata, Thompson and the 4x100-meter relay, Slippery Rock also had eight other runners compete Friday that will advance to finals Saturday.
Â
Shannon Dooley posted the No. 5 time in the 800-meter prelims (1:54.34), Crow was the No. 4 qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles (15.03),
Brenden Lewis was the No. 7 qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles (15.09) and Johnson was the No. 7 qualifier in the 400-meter dash (48.89). SRU will also send all four 400-meter hurdlers to the finals after an error in hurdle placement in the prelims will lead to everyone running a timed final Saturday.
Cade Adams posted a career-best time of 54.91 seconds for the No. 5 qualifier.
Darien Malawi (57.68), Crow (58.74) and
Tyler Morosky (1:01.54) will all run in the finals too.
Â
Saturday's final day of competition is set to begin at 11 a.m. in the field events and at 12:30 p.m. on the track. For a full schedule, link to buy tickets, links to live results and a full breakdown of the live video available for the meet, head over to the
