Dworek, Eakin, Virata lead SRU at Grove City meet

Bryan Dworek (long jump) and John Eakin (shot put) won their events with season-bests and NCAA provisional marks and AJ Virata had a hand in four event wins to pace The Rock men to a dominant showing at Grove City Wednesday.

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's track and field team recorded 19 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks, four NCAA provisional marks and won eight events at the Grove City Mini Invitational Wednesday evening at Grove City College.
 
The Rock picked up NCAA marks and wins in both the long jump and the shot put Wednesday evening. Bryan Dworek claimed the top spot in the long jump with an outdoor career-best effort of 7.27 meters and John Eakin won the shot put by improving his season-best effort to 17.40 meters. Joshua Gose also hit the NCAA standard in the shot put to place second with a toss of 16.69 meters.
 
Slippery Rock had four men hit the PSAC mark in the shot put with Seaton Wozniak finishing fourth with a toss of 15.37 meters and Joshua Rohland taking fifth with a mark of 14.15 meters. Wozniak also finished second in the discus with a PSAC qualifying toss of 43.20 meters and Zach Gose reached the conference standard as well in fifth place with a throw of 41.09 meters.
 
The Rock also picked up wins in the high jump and the triple jump, sweeping the top spots in both events. AJ Virata won the high jump with a clearance of 2.00 meters with Robert Kozares taking second with a PSAC mark of 1.90 meters. Dan Hyatt won the pole vault with a clearance of 4.45 meters and Jakob Graff took second with a clearance of 4.20 meters.
 
Taye Lynch rounded out the top efforts in the field with a second place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 13.71 meters.
 
Virata finished his day a perfect four-for-four in events wins, adding all three short sprint titles to his high jump win. He claimed the 100-meter dash in 11.03 seconds into a headwind, won the 200-meter dash in 21.70 seconds and then ran a leg of the winning 4x100-meter relay, where he teamed with Kadin Johnson, Matthew Crow and Dworek to post an NCAA provisional time of 40.98 seconds. Johnson was also second in the 100m in 11.15 seconds and third in the 200m in 22.33 seconds.
 
Crow picked up his own win with a time of 14.95 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, where he led SRU to three PSAC marks. Brenden Lewis was third in 15.39 seconds and Darien Malawi was fifth in 16.08 seconds. Tyler Morosky gave SRU a fourth PSAC mark in the hurdle events when he took third in the 400-meter hurdles in 57.40 seconds.
 
Johnson, Morosky, Cam Lindsey and Jeremy Uher then teamed up to place second in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:24.64 to close out the meet.
 
Wednesday's meet marked the first of four straight days of competition for SRU this week. The team will send a small group of multi-event athletes to Susquehanna University Thursday and Friday to compete in a decathlon. The Rock's hammer throwers will throw at home Friday at 2 p.m. as part of the Westminster Invitational (Westminster does not have a competition hammer cage) and the full team will return to action Saturday at the Westminster Invitational.
