White tops Green 10-7 in Rock football spring game

The White team took down the Green team 10-7 in Slippery Rock's "Green vs. White" spring game Friday evening.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University football team hosted its annual "Green vs. White" Spring Game Friday evening with the White team coming away with a 10-7 win over the Green team on a beautiful evening at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
The teams were divided with the No. 1 offensive unit and the No. 2 defensive unit making up the White squad and the No. 1 defensive unit and No. 2 offensive unit making up the Green team. The game featured four 10-minute quarters with a running clock in the second half and no live kickoffs or punt returns.
 
The top offensive unit wasted little time in getting on the board, needing just 35 seconds to score the first touchdown of the game. Quarterback Brayden Long connected with Kyle Sheets on the first play from scrimmage and then hit Jawon Hall in stride for a 55-yard TD pass on the second play of the game.
 
The White offense would tack on three more points on its next possession with a 37-yard field goal from Kevin Roberts to make it 10-0 in the first quarter.
 
The Green team's No. 1 defensive unit stepped up and slammed the door from there, pitching a shutout over the final three quarters. The No. 2 offense scored a touchdown in the third quarter to account for the final points when Bradly Hoffman connected with Connor Chrisman on a 17-yard TD pass.
 
The White team put up 193 yards of total offense with 185 passing yards and eight net rushing yards. Those rushing yards were impacted significantly by the lost yardage from "sacks," as the quarterbacks were ruled down anytime a defensive player entered the backfield. The White unit gained 50 yards on true rushing attempts.
 
The Green squad put up 131 total yards of offense with 96 passing yards and 35 net rushing yards, but actually gained 73 rushing yards on true rushing attempts.
 
Long looked solid as the starting quarterback, finishing his night 11-of-18 for 168 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Hoffman completed 7-of-8 total pass attempts for 69 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Zaire Hart-Hawkins completed 5-of-8 passes for 31 yards and Zak Artley and Jackson Bouslough each completed one pass attmpt.
 
Sheets grabbed three passes for 54 yards, including two highlight-reel catches down the sideline, while playing limited snaps. Hall also played limited snaps and finished with two catches for 63 yards and one TD. Xander McClure started as the slot receiver with the top offensive unit and caught four passes for 39 yards. Chrisman grabbed three passes for 18 yards and one score for the Green team, which was led by Gavyn Barnes with three catches for 39 yards.
 
Starting running back Chris D'Or only took two carries in limited work and rushed for seven yards. Luke McCoy ran for 21 yards on four attempts as the second back for the White team. The top rusher in the game was Isaiah Edwards, who ran for 47 yards on eight carries, which included a game-long 25-yard burst. Mel Carter also ran for 15 yards on four carries.
 
The top defensive unit was led by Hillsdale graduate transfer linebacker Kyle Kudla in his SRU debut. Kudla tallied eight total tackles, including 1.5 sacks. Jake Bush recorded five tackles and 3.0 tackles for loss and Ali Abdul-Hakim recorded three tackles. Munchie Johnson, Debrick Johnson and Andrew Vince were all credited with 1.0 sack for the White team.
 
The Green defense was led by Dominic Martinka and Michael Henwood with five stops each, while Henwood added 1.5 tackles for loss. Elijah Halley was credited with 2.0 sacks and Trever Valenti and Nick Frisco were each credited with one.
 
Slippery Rock will open the 2023 season with three straight home games beginning Sept. 2 when Wayne State (Michigan) visits for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
