SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's track and field team recorded 23 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks, two NCAA provisional marks and nine event wins at the Dave Labor Invitational hosted by SRU Saturday at the William Lennox Track.
Â
The meet, which was the first of four home meets this spring for Slippery Rock, featured a storm delay in the middle of the day after wind gusts of more than 60 miles per hour ripped through the stadium. The storm knocked the power out in the stadium and lifted the jumping pits out of the stadium. After the worst of the storm passed, the meet was able to resume but strong winds the rest of the day and evening made competing difficult for everyone.
Â
Both of Slippery Rock's NCAA provisional marks on the day came in the throws with
Dalton Anderson winning the javelin and
John Eakin winning the shot put. Anderson recorded a mark of 58.66 meters to top SRU alumnus and former DII national champion Dave Reinhardt for the win. Eakin took the shot put crown with a season-best toss of 17.23 meters.
Joshua Rohland was also fifth in the shot put with a mark of 14.20 meters to hit the PSAC standard.
Â
The Rock also picked up a win in the hammer throw to claim three of the four throws.
Joshua VanDeMark won the hammer with a toss of 55.09 meters to lead The Rock to five PSAC marks in the event.
Brandon McCray was third at 49.98 meters, followed by Eakin in fifth at 45.68 meters, Rohland in sixth at 44.06 meters and
Zach Gose in seventh at 44.04 meters. The PSAC marks in the throws were capped by
Seaton Wozniak placing fourth in the discus with a throw of 42.62 meters and
Zach Gose taking fifth at 41.99 meters.
Â
Slippery Rock won two more field events with
Dan Hyatt winning the pole vault with a clearance of 4.66 meters and
Taye Lynch winning the triple jump with a leap of 13.98 meters. SRU had three other athletes hit the PSAC standard in the triple with
Zack Duda finishing third at 13.41 meters, followed by
Ethan Folmer in fifth at 13.18 meters and
Ian James in sixth at 13.05 meters.
Â
AJ Virata claimed a win the 200-meter dash in 21.81 seconds and also ran a leg of the winning 4x100-meter relay. He teamed with
Kadin Johnson,
Matthew Crow and
Bryan Dworek to win the relay in 41.95 seconds. Virata was also third in the open 100-meter dash in 10.82 seconds to lead SRU to four PSAC marks there. Crow was fifth in 10.87 seconds, followed by Dworek in 10th in 10.98 seconds and
Kanye Thompson in 15th in 11.10 seconds. Dworek also led the way in the long jump with a runner-up finish and a leap of 6.84 meters.
Â
Crow and
Brenden Lewis would have likely put up PSAC times in the 110-meter hurdles, but the fast heat of that event had a timing error right before the meet went into the weather delay.
Kyle Adams did have his time recorded and he finished fourth overall with a PSAC mark of 16.08 seconds.
Â
The final PSAC mark on the track came from
Ethan Brentham, who won the 10,000-meter run in 33:05.58. The Rock also picked up a win in the 800-meter run with
Shannon Dooley taking the top spot in 2:00.04 while running into a strong wind.
Â
Slippery Rock will compete at a pair of local meets next week, sending athletes to Grove City College Wednesday for the Grove City Mid-Week Meet and sending the majority of the team to Westminster College Saturday for the Westminster Invitational.
