Rock to host IUP Saturday in Morgan's Message Game

Slippery Rock will look to stay unbeaten at home when Indiana (Pa.) visits Saturday for a 1 p.m. PSAC West match where SRU will raise funds for Morgan's Message and mental health awareness.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team will host Indiana University (Pa.) Saturday at 1 p.m. in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division match at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

RECORDS
Slippery Rock enters the game with a 5-2 overall record with both of its losses coming on the road at nationally ranked teams (No. 14 Lynn and No. 19 Seton Hill). The Rock are 1-1 in PSAC West games after picking up a 17-9 win at home over Lock Haven Wednesday. Indiana enters the game with a 4-3 overall record and a perfect 3-0 mark in PSAC West games. The Crimson Hawks have won three games in a row (Gannon, Edinboro, Mercyhurst) after losing three straight to Bloomsburg, Walsh and East Stroudsburg between March 4-12.

Indiana owns a 17-5 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to 2007. All of the last 10 meetings in the series have been decided by five goals or fewer and six of those 10 games were decided by two or fewer goals, including the most recent meeting last April when IUP came away with a 12-11 win at SRU in the final game of the 2022 season. Slippery Rock has won four of the last six meetings in the series.

Slippery Rock scored 13 seconds into the game and jumped out to a 4-0 lead and looked to be in control until midway through the third quarter. The Rock scored with 6:27 to play in the third to increase their lead to 9-3, but IUP would storm back into the game from there. The Crimson Hawks scored six unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to cap a 9-1 run and take a 12-10 lead with 2:19 to play. SRU stopped the bleeding and cut the deficit to one goal with 1:38 to play, but couldn't find the equalizer. Slippery Rock led for more than 50 minutes in the game, but IUP led for the final 7:46 to steal the win. SRU finished with advantages of 31-25 in shots and 16-11 in draw controls. Both teams grabbed 21 ground balls. The Rock got one goal and four assists from Jamie DiCarlo and three goals and one assist from Emily Benham. Gillian O'Rourke made 10 saves in goal. IUP was led by Sarah Reustle with five goals and one assist and Jordan Kulp with one goal and four assists. Ashley Andrikanich made 13 saves in goal.

ROCK WINS FIRST PSAC GAME
Slippery Rock bounced back from a loss at No. 19 Seton Hill in its PSAC West opener last weekend to pick up a 17-9 win over Lock Haven Wednesday. The Rock led just 7-6 at halftime before outscoring LHU 10-3 in the second half to run away with the win.

 

RONDEAU SETS SRU CAREER RECORD
Charleigh Rondeau had a game-high 11 draw controls against Lock Haven Wednesday to give her sole possession of the SRU career record for draw controls. She enters this game with 282 career draw controls, topping the former record of 271 that was set by Lauren Laubach in 2013. Rondeau also owns SRU's single-game (18) and single-season (144) records for draw controls and her 7.05 draw controls per game is also an SRU career record.
 
RONDEAU AMONG NATION'S BEST
Charleigh Rondeau ranks No. 2 among all players in Division II in draw controls per game with an average of 9.2 draw controls per game. Only Alicia Cannon of Anderson (South Carolina) averages more with her 9.55 per game. No other players in the PSAC average more than 7.5 per game (Sam Graf of Kutztown and Maggie Newton of Mercyhurst).
 
UNBEATEN AT HOME IN 2023
SRU enters this game with a 4-0 record at home this season. The Rock were 6-2 at home in 2022 and are a combined 10-2 at home under head coach Taryn Burkholder.
 
ROOKIES ON THE SCORE SHEET
Slippery Rock has two true freshmen ranked in the top five on the team in scoring through the first seven games of the season. Olivia Fox ranks third in scoring with 10 goals and four assists and Ida Modin ranks fourth with 10 goals and three assists. Fox also ranks 10th in Division II in free position shooting percentage, scoring on 71.4 percent of her free position attempts. Erin Melcher has four goals and two assists and Maddie Blazey has three goals and two assists. Leora Owings has scored two goals and dished four assists and Ella Koslowski and Sydney Ulmer each have one goal and one assist. In total, Slippery Rock has gotten 31 of its 95 goals from freshmen, or 33 percent of its total goal output.
 
FIVE-GOAL GAMES FOR ROCK DUO
Slippery Rock's two leading scorers, Lauren Searles and Brooke Wisniewski, both tallied five goals against Lock Haven Wednesday evening. Searles now leads the team with 22 points on 18 goals and four assists, while Wisniewski has 20 points on 18 goals and two assists.
 
SRU STATS BREAKDOWN
Through seven games, Slippery Rock is outshooting opponents 219-169 and outscoring the opposition 95-70. The Rock have posted advantages of 146-130 in ground balls and 107-85 in draw controls while also causing 87 turnovers and limiting opponents to 72.6 percent success on clear attempts.
 
Lauren Searles leads the team in scoring with a career-high 22 points on 18 goals and four assists while also leading the team with 32 shots on goal. Brooke Wisniewski ranks second in scoring with 18 goals and two assists. Olivia Fox with 10 goals and four assists, Ida Modin with 10 goals and three assistsand Rachel Mahoney with seven goals and three assists round out the SRU players with at least 10 points this spring. Camryn Whipple (5 goals, 4 assists), Charleigh Rondeau (6g, 2a), Eryn Little (5g, 1a), Erin Melcher (4g, 2a), Krysta Frankowski (3g, 3a) and Leora Owings (2g, 4a) round out the top scorers.
 
Rondeau leads the team with 57 draw controls with Mahoney ranked second on the team with 12. Sara Danowski had a team-high 10 caused turnovers to lead the defense before she suffered an injury at Seton Hill. Alexa Juska now leads the defense with 11 caused turnovers, while Owings and Amelia Nitsche each have 10 and Nicole Masi has nine.
 
Gillian O'Rourke has started five games in goal and owns a 3-1 record with a 10.69 goals against average and a .452 save percentage. Izzie Sutton has started two games and is 2-1 with an 8.52 goals against average and a .441 save percentage. Combined, The Rock's two goalies own a 10.00 goals against average and a .449 save percentage.

SCOUTING THE CRIMSON HAWKS
Indiana is outscoring opponents by a wide margin at 93-49 through seven games. The Crimson Hawks have a 19-1 win over Findlay and a 20-2 win over Edinboro to thank for most of that margin. IUP is outshooting opponents 213-129 and has posted advantages of 101-63 in draw controls, 144-131 in ground balls and 70-65 in caused turnovers.
 
Six players have reached double digit point totals on the year, led by Kathryn Burke with 14 goals and 11 assists for 25 points. Sarah Reustle has 22 goals and two assists for 24 points and leads the team with 33 draw controls, 25 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers. Jordan Kulp (8 goals, 11 assists), Leah Moyer (11g, 3a), Brenna Whiteside (7g, 6a) and Emme Mass (10g, 2a) round out the top scorers.
 
Rachel Knight leads the defense with 10 caused turnovers. IUP has played three different goalies on the year with Maddy Schramm getting the most time with just shy of 300 minutes in the cage. She is 3-2 with a 7.58 goals against average and a .448 save percentage. Ashley Andrikanich has played just under 100 minutes and is 1-1 with a 6.10 goals against average and a .474 save percentage.
