No. 8 Rock downs No. 22 Seton Hill 10-5 in downpour

No. 8 Slippery Rock took over sole possession of first place in the PSAC West and stayed unbeaten on the year with a 10-5 win over No. 22 Seton Hill in a torrential downpour Wednesday evening.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The eighth ranked Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team took over sole possession of first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division with a 10-5 win over No. 22 Seton Hill University in a torrential downpour Wednesday from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
The Rock jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter when the game had to be halted for 35 minutes for a lightning delay. During the delay, the first of numerous torrential rains and heavy winds pummeled the stadium.
 
After the delay, SRU added two more goals to take a 7-1 lead into a shortened halftime. The Rock tacked on two more in the third quarter to take a 9-1 advantage with 12:24 to play in the third before the weather turned again.
 
Seton Hill scored the next three goals to cut the deficit to 9-4 with 13:02 to play in the fourth, but the two teams would only score one more goal each while battling the heavy rain and wind in the fourth quarter.
 
Slippery Rock improved to 11-0 overall and 4-0 in the PSAC West with the win and moved into sole possession of first place in the division. Seton Hill dropped to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in PSAC West action.
 
The Rock were dominant for large stretches of the game Wednesday and finished with advantages of 36-17 in total shots, 25-13 in shots on goal, 9-8 in draw controls and 24-21 in ground balls. SRU went 17-of-19 on clear attempts and limited the Griffins to 18-of-26.
 
Senior attacker Grace Rotter outscored Slippery Rock's opposition by herself for the second straight game to lead all players with six goals and one assist for seven points. She has 11 goals and two assists in her last two games.
 
Reagan Richeson added two goals and Abby Fink and Shannon Von Kaenel each scored one goal. Sydney Ulmer and Maddie Blazey both finished with one assist to cap the scorers. Von Kaenel also pulled down five draw controls, while Richeson caused three turnovers.
 
Violet Freebody led the defense with three caused turnovers, while Paige Jenkins caused two turnovers and grabbed four ground balls and Gemma Sciarroni grabbed four ground balls.
 
Lily Ventresca was stellar in goal in the opening half and finished the game with seven saves, four ground balls and two caused turnovers to improve to 10-0 on the season. Slippery Rock limited its ninth straight opponent to six goals or fewer and held an opponent to single-digit scoring for the 10th time in 11 games this spring.
 
Seton Hill was paced by Sydney Marusko with two goals and goalie Katelyn Patts, who made 15 saves to keep her team in the game.
 
Slippery Rock extended its current streaks to 21 straight regular season wins, 18 straight PSAC West wins and 17 straight wins at home. The Rock will look to extend those streaks again when Lock Haven visits Saturday night for a 6 p.m. game to close out the first round of PSAC West divisional play.
