Rock men win Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge

Slippery Rock won five events on the way to winning the overall team title at the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University men's track and field team recorded 16 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks, five event wins, one NCAA provisional mark and 28 top 10 finishes on the way winning the team title at the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge that wrapped up Saturday from Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
 
The Rock claimed the team title with 126.5 points over the two-day competition, topping Division I Coastal Carolina by 10.5 points. The Chanticleers were second with 116 points, followed by Concord in third with 80 points. A total of 24 teams recorded points at the meet.
 
Slippery Rock got 18 individual points from AJ Virata, who was the highest scoring male track athlete at the meet. Virata won the 200-meter dash in 21.94 seconds and took second in the 100-meter dash in 11.07 seconds in the finals after clocking a time of 10.66 seconds in the prelims for the fastest 100-meter time of the weekend.
 
Dalton Anderson had the lone NCAA provisional mark for The Rock when he won the javelin with a throw of 59.71 meters. The Rock also picked up a win in the shot put when Joshua Gose took the top spot with a toss of 15.60 meters. Seaton Wozniak was third at 14.47 meters and Joshua Rohland was fourth at 14.12 meters to give SRU three PSAC marks in the shot put. Wozniak also hit the PSAC mark in the discus with a third place finish and a toss of 42.55 meters. Zach Gose was fourth in the discus with a PSAC qualifying throw of 42.32 meters and Rohland took second in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.15 meters to give SRU seven PSAC marks in the throws.
 
Dan Hyatt capped the field event wins when he took the top spot in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.45 meters. SRU also picked up a PSAC qualifying mark in the triple jump with Ethan Folmer taking sixth with a leap of 13.17 meters to round out the top efforts in the field.
 
Matthew Crow joined Virata in picking up a win on the track when he took the top spot in the 400-meter hurdles in 55.63 seconds. Cade Adams was seventh in 57.76 seconds to give SRU two PSAC marks in the intermediate hurdles. Crow was also seventh in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.07 seconds, where he was joined by Brenden Lewis in ninth in 15.58 seconds to give SRU four PSAC marks between the two hurdle races.
 
The final PSAC mark on the track came from Kadin Johnson, who was 14th in the 100-meter dash in 11.07 seconds.
 
Slippery Rock also picked up points in all three relays it entered this weekend with a third place finish in the 4x400-meter relay (3:25.49), a fourth place showing in the 4x800-meter relay (8:13.26) and a seventh place finish in the 4x200-meter relay (1:38.91).
 
This weekend's meet marked the outdoor season opener for Slippery Rock, which will stay in Myrtle Beach all week during spring break before competing at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium again next weekend at the Shamrock Invitational.
