YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –
Samantha Gilbert broke the school record in the 60-meter dash to lead the Slippery Rock University women's indoor track & field team in the 2023-24 season opener Friday at Youngstown State University's Icebreaker meet.

The Rock women finished the meet with 13 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks, three NCAA provisional qualifying marks and one event victory.

Gilbert headlined the day for SRU when she tied the program record in the 60-meter dash in the preliminary round and then broke the record outright in the finals with a fourth place finish in 7.65 seconds. Her time is an NCAA provisional mark and topped the former SRU record of 7.67 seconds that was set by Reagan Hess at the same meet in 2018. Gilbert closed out her day by also hitting the PSAC automatic standard in the 200-meter dash with a 17th place showing in 25.91 seconds.

The Rock picked up one event win Friday when
Kendall Grossman took the top spot in the seeded section of the pole vault. Her clearance of 3.80 meters is an NCAA provisional mark and led her to a win in a field that included seven Division I vaulters. Teammate
Allie Taylor also hit the PSAC standard with an eighth place finish and a clearance of 3.45 meters.

The final NCAA provisional mark of the day came from
Sarah Corrie, who took second overall in the shot put with a throw of 14.21 meters, trailing only one Division I thrower from Pitt that threw 14.50m. Corrie led four SRU women to at least the PSAC standard in the event.
Olivia Heckman was seventh with a toss of 12.72 meters,
Becca Martin was 12th with a throw of 12.23 meters and
Savannah Schneck was 14th with a mark of 11.98 meters.

Tiffany Jolayemi rounded out a strong day for the throwers with a sixth place showing in the weight throw with a PSAC qualifying mark of 15.78 meters.

Slippery Rock picked up three PSAC marks in the horizontal jumps with
Baylee Blauser hitting the standard in both the long and triple jumps. She was 10th in the long jump with a leap of 5.37 meters and was seventh in the triple jump at 11.09 meters, finishing one spot behind teammate
Alice Bogia in sixth place with a leap of 11.25 meters.

The final PSAC qualifying mark of the day came from freshman
Cassidy Davis, who placed sixth in the seeded section of the high jump with a clearance of 1.57 meters.

Slippery Rock closed out the day with a sixth place showing in the 4x400-meter relay, where
Rachel Veneziano,
Annasophia Stauffer,
Layne Miller and
Lydia Reed teamed up to run a time of 4:07.51.

Friday's meet marked the first of two competitions for SRU this weekend as The Rock will send five multi-event athletes to Edinboro Saturday for the Mike Kowal Multi Meet. Results from that meet will be posted Sunday at the conclusion of the two-day multi event. The rest of The Rock team will now take a break for finals and the holidays before returning to action Jan. 13 at Kent State University.
