LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –
Joseph Cintavey earned an individual qualifying spot for the National Championships and the Slippery Rock University men's cross country team finished fourth at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships Saturday at Lock Haven.
Â
The Rock men just missed out on a team qualifying spot for nationals by one position, finishing fourth in the race for the program's highest finish since a fourth place showing in 2012. There is still an outside shot that SRU could qualify as the NCAA will announce additional at-large teams next week, but the Atlantic Region seldom has earned one of those at-large spots. Charleston and Davis & Elkins tied matching scores of 54 points and Shippensburg was third with 63 points to earn the final qualifying spot. Slippery Rock was fourth with 104 points, followed by Indiana (Pa.) in fifth with 178 points.
Â
Cintavey earned one of the two individual automatic qualifying spots by being the first finisher in the race that was not from one of the top three teams. He finished seventh overall after covering the 10,000-meter course in 30:40 to pick up his second career All-Region honor.
Â
SRU had two other athletes earn All-Region honors as well with
Ethan Brentham placing 10th in 30:50 and
Troy Hart taking 15th in 31:07. Brentham is now a three-time All-Region selection and Hart is a two-time honoree. Brentham also has a chance to earn one of the at-large berths into nationals as well as he was the third finisher not from one of the top three teams. If the region gets any men into nationals via the at-large process, Brentham will be the first runner selected.
Â
Devon Navaroli narrowly missed an All-Region spot by just two places with a 27th place finish in 31:26. The Rock's final scorer was
John Juszynski in his regional debut with a 48th place finish in 32:28.
Â
Michael Novak was 61st in 32:46 and
Tucker Davis was 67th in 32:52 as The Rock placed all seven of their runners in the top 62 positions in a field of 155 finishers.
Â
Slippery Rock will find out next week if Cintavey is the lone representative qualified for nationals. Those qualifiers will now prepare to travel to Joplin, Missouri for the National Championships, which will be hosted by Missouri Southern State University at the Tom Rutledge Cross Country Course Nov. 18. Meet information for nationals is available
