Rock set for road test at No. 1 East Stroudsburg

The Slippery Rock field hockey team closes out its two-game road trip when it travels to No. 1 East Stroudsburg for a PSAC game 12 p.m. Saturday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University field hockey team closes out its two-game road trip when it travels to No. 1 East Stroudsburg University for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game 12 p.m. Saturday.

ALL-TIME SERIES
The Warriors have won 10 straight games in the series to improve their record against The Rock to 40-8-1 dating back to the 1984 season.
 
LAST MEETING
ESU scored three consecutive goals on the way to an eventual 3-1 victory over The Rock on Sept. 17, 2022 at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. Slippery Rock's back line faced constant pressure throughout the majority of the game as East Stroudsburg fired off 25 shots, 16 of which were on target.
 
Grace Burker made 13 saves in the contest, the second highest single-game save total in her career. Erin Roland scored SRU's lone goal off a Nadia Irving assist.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
LAST TIME OUT

Slippery Rock lost a tight 1-0 double overtime decision on the road Tuesday at Frostburg State University in non-conference play.
 
CLOSE LOSSES
The Frostburg State game represented Slippery Rock's fourth one-goal defeat of the season and sixth loss of the year by two goals or less overall.
 
BACK TO OT
Three of The Rock's first 10 games this season have went to overtime. The three overtime contests already represent the third most games in a single-season that have gone to extra time in program history.
 
One other game this year was also headed into overtime before being decided in the last three minutes of regulation: Converse scored the game-winning goal in its Sept. 10 victory at SRU with just 2:34 left to play in the fourth quarter.

DOUBLE-DIGIT GAME FOR BURKER
Rock goalkeeper Grace Burker stopped nine Frostburg State shots in regulation and another in the second overtime period for what was the eighth game of her career with at least 10 saves.
 
Over 10 games this season (645:05), Burker has made 55 saves with a .724 save percentage and a 1.95 Goals Against Average. Across the PSAC, Burker ranks second in the league in saves per game with 5.50.
 
Heading into the weekend, Burker ranks fourth in program history 267 career saves, 13 away from passing Carlee DuMars (2012-15) for third place.

SHUTTING DOWN OPPONENTS LATE
Slippery Rock has allowed just two fourth-quarter goals this season. Additionally, SRU has also surrendered only four scores in third quarter of its 10 games this season for a total of just six regulation second-half goals allowed compared to 13 goals given up in the first half of games.
 
LEADING THE OFFENSE
Five Rock athletes have tallied goals so far this season. Gianna Conti leads the way with three while Hilary Hoffman has also registered multiple goals with two. The trio of Bailee Christman, Erin Roland and Grace Maynard having each supplied one goal.

SRU have assists on three of its nine goals this season courtesy of Hoffman, Christman and Haley Metcalf.
 
ATTACKING THE CAGE
Slippery Rock fired off 11 shots against Frostburg State, which was its third contest of the season with at least 10 shots and its highest single-game output since recording 13 attempts in a 3-2 victory over Maryville on Sept. 2.
 
Hoffman has taken a team-high 13 shots on goal with Roland close behind at 12. Meanwhile, Christman (9), Conti (8), Leslie Colliver (7), Kayla Del Vecchio (5) and Madison Shomo (2) have each compiled multiple shots on goal as well.

Since the 2010 season, Slippery Rock has won nine games against nationally ranked teams. The Rock's previous wins against nationally ranked teams include victories against Kutztown (2017 / No. 5), West Chester (2017 / No. 3), East Stroudsburg (2014 / No. 5), Bloomsburg (2013 / No. 7), Indiana (2011 / No. 6, 2010 / No. 7, 2010 / No. 8) and LIU Post (2010 / No. 5).

SCOUTING THE WARRIORS
As one would expect from the top-ranked team in the nation, East Stroudsburg has dominated the competition this season by outscoring its opponents 47-10 through its first 10 games. East Stroudsburg leads in the nation in goals per game at 4.7 while surrendering just 1.00 goals per contest.
 
ESU's lone setback of the year came in a 4-3 overtime loss to Pace. Since then, the Warriors have won four straight games with its most recent win being a 2-1 victory at Millersville.
 
The Warriors feature a balanced offensive attack in which 17 different athletes have scored at least one goal. The trio of Jady van Gils (6 goals, 3 assists), Madison Kline (6 goals, 3 assists) and Nicol Krozser (7 goals, 1 assist) lead ESU's attack.
 
Defensively, Amy Supey has played 555:04 of a possible 620:57 in goal for East Stroudsburg in 2023. Supey enters Saturday with 16 saves, a .640 save percentage and a 0.97 GAA.
