SCOUTING THE ROCK
LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock officially opened its 2022 season last week with a pair of games in Gaffney, South Carolina. Following a 3-1 loss to Pace University in its season-opener, The Rock rebounded to earn a 3-2 overtime victory over Belmont Abbey College.
Â
ROCK SOLID vs. NON-PSAC SCHOOLS
Dating back to the 2010 season, Slippery Rock holds a commanding 29-14 (.674) record against non-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference teams.
Â
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
48 of The Rock's 76 wins (63.2 percent) over the last decade have come at the friendly confines of Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. Slippery Rock is a healthy 14-9 (.609) when hosting teams that compete outside of the PSAC over the same stretch.
Â
KARMONICK LEADS THE WAY EARLY
Samantha Karmonick has had a great start to her 2022 season. Over two games last week, she netted three points on one goal and one assist while placing all four of her shot attempts on goal. The goal came in the form of an overtime game-winner against Belmont Abbey.
Â
THREE OTHERS GET ON THE BOARD TOO
Joining Karmonick as The Rock's early goal scorers were
Leslie Colliver,
Addy Ross and
Gianna Conti with one apiece. Ross' goal came against Pace while Colliver and Conti helped to force overtime versus Belmont Abbey with their scores coming in the third quarter.
Â
LENDING A HELPING HAND
The duo of
Bailee Christman and
Kayla Del Vecchio picked up their first assists of the season as well last week against Belmont Abbey off of the goals from Conti and Colliver.
Â
Christman also exited the opening weekend with three shots on goal, the second highest total of any Rock athlete early on behind only Karmonick and slightly ahead of Colliver (2) and
Erin Roland (2). Â
Â
BURKER CO-LEADER IN SAVES PER GAME
Slippery Rock goalie
Grace Burker played every second of The Rock's first two games, making 12 saves (.706) with a 2.46 goals against average. Burker heads into the Franklin Pierce game tied for first in the PSAC along with Bloomsburg's Abby Shaffer for the league lead in saves per game.
Â
WINNING THE CORNER BATTLE EARLY ON
Over two games, Slippery Rock has been awarded 16 penalty corners while surrendering just seven to the opposition. On average, each of The Rock's four goals this season have come within 11.5 seconds of an SRU penalty corner.
Â
CONSISTENT LINEUP SO FAR
Slippery Rock head coach
Rayell Wallace has used the same starting lineup of Karmonick, Ross, Conti, Christman, Del Vecchio, Burker, Roland,
Megan Rude,
Haley Metcalf,
Nadia Irving and
Gabriella Delcoco in both of SRU's games this season with Colliver,
Alex Held,
Sammy Graci,
Grace Maynard coming off the bench.
Â
QUICK STRIKE FOR CONTI
Conti's goal against Belmont Abbey came just 2:15 into the second half, which is the third quickest goal into the second half of a game for The Rock over the last 19 years.

Â
SCOUTING THE RAVENS
Franklin Pierce opened the year Sept. 2 with a 7-0 loss to No. 10 Converse University. Offensively, Rebecca Phillips recorded FPU's lone shot.
Â
MacKenzie Potvin (0-1) and Addy Araneo split time in goal for the Ravens with Potvin making eight saves with four goals allowed and Araneo stopping three shots and surrendering three goals.
Â
While Franklin Pierce lost its leading scorer from a year ago in Feline van Doorn (10 goals), FPU does return six athletes from last year's team that scored at least one goal including the duo of Anna Beck and Christine Jarowicz who scored four goals each in 2021.
Â
Potvin and Araneo also split time in 2021 with Araneo making 12 starts and Potvin getting the nod in the other eight games.
Â
UP NEXT
Slippery Rock continues its three-game homestand when it hosts Lincoln Memorial University 11 a.m. Sunday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium on First Responders Day. All current and former first responders are invited to come to the game with their families and friends.
