MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's track and field team sits in fourth place after the opening day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships wrapped up Thursday night from Millersville University.

The Rock scored six points in the hammer throw Thursday, which was one of just two event finals that took place on the opening day of competition. The only other events Thursday were the first five events of the 10-event decathlon, which will wrap up Friday on the second day of competition.
Edinboro picked up a big swing in the 10,000-meter final to lead the team standings after day one with 30 points. Shippensburg sits second with 28 points, followed by East Stroudsburg in third with 14 points. The Rock are fourth with six points as the only other team to score on day one.

The scoring effort for Slippery Rock came from a pair of throwers with
Joshua VanDeMark finishing fourth in the hammer with a toss of 53.78 meters to pick up five points and
Brandon McCray finishing eighth with a mark of 48.50 meters to score one point in the team standings.

Slippery Rock failed to score in the other event final that took place Thursday, the 10,000-meter run, with
Ethan Brentham leading SRU with an 18th place showing in 33:27.17.

The headliner on day one of competition was multi-event specialist
Jason Goodman, who had a strong opening day of the decathlon to sit in first place at the halfway mark with 3,621 points. Goodman ranked in the top three finishers in all five events contested on Thursday.
Gavin Thomas sits third with 3,282 points after a strong showing on the opening day, while
Kyle Adams is eighth with 2,916 points and
James Amodei is 11th with 2,679 points.

Competition on day two of the championship meet will begin with the decathlon 110-meter hurdles Friday morning at 10 a.m.
