LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University senior thrower
John Eakin was recognized by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference as the Male Field Athlete of the Week when the league unveiled its final weekly awards of the season Tuesday.
Â
Eakin, a senior from Bradford, Pennsylvania, picked up the weekly honor after his performance at Penn State University's Jim Thorpe Invitational last Friday.
Â
In a competition with mostly Division I throwers, Eakin took fourth overall and was the top Division II athlete in the shot put with an NCAA provisional mark of 17.06 meters. While that mark is below his season-best of 17.43 meters, it would still rank first among all throwers in the Atlantic Region this spring.
Â
Eakin is the only thrower in the region to top the 17.00-meter mark this spring and he has now done so in three different competitions.
Â
He will enter the PSAC Championships this week as the No. 1 seed in the event.
Â
Slippery Rock will travel to Millersville for the three-day PSAC Championship meet Thursday through Saturday.
