LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University senior attacker
Emily Benham was named Monday as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Athlete of the Week for her performance in a pair of games last week.
Â
Benham, a senior from Rochester, New York, earns her first PSAC weekly honor this spring after tallying 11 total points in two games last week and breaking the SRU single-season assist record in the process.
Â
She opened the week by leading Slippery Rock to an upset win on the road at division-leading IUP that marked the Crimson Hawks' only loss in the first round of divisional games. Benham scored five goals and handed out two assists in that 14-9 win.
Â
She followed that up with two goals and two assists in a home loss to Mercyhurst, which brought her season total to 26 assists and broke the former SRU record of 25 that was set by Kaytlin Callaghan in 2015.
Â
Benham has 21 points in her last three games and now leads SRU with 59 points on the year. She is 12 points shy of tying the SRU single-season record of 71 that is owned by Callaghan. With five games left in the regular season, Benham will need to average 2.6 points per game to break the single-season scoring record.
Â
Slippery Rock will kick off the stretch run with a pair of road games this week before closing the regular season with three consecutive home games. The Rock will visit No. 20 Seton Hill Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game and will then travel to Edinboro Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.
