National Championship Field
INDIANAPOLIS – Slippery Rock University senior high jumper
Cecily Greggs will represent The Rock at the 2022 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships after she was officially announced as an accepted entrant by the NCAA Tuesday evening.
Â
Greggs will be the lone Slippery Rock winter athlete still competing when she travels to Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas to compete in the national meet Friday, March 11. The women's high jump is scheduled to go off on the opening day of the competition at 3:40 p.m. central time (4:40 p.m. EST). She is the only horizontal or vertical jumper from any Pennyslvania State Athletic Conference team to be accepted into the national meet.
Â
Greggs will be competing at her first National Championship after earning that opportunity in dramatic fashion last Sunday on the final possible day to improve her qualifying mark.
Â
She entered last weekend's PSAC championships outside the top 25 on the national list with a season-best clearance of 1.68 meters (5'6"). To reach the national meet, she needed to improve that mark by almost two full inches.
Â
Just three athletes reached 1.69 meters (5'6 ½")  at the PSAC meet. Beyonc'e Kelly from Cal U cleared the mark on her first attempt. Sydney Sheaffer of Bloomsburg failed on all three of her attempts. Greggs missed on her first two attempts, but cleared on her third and final attempt to stay alive in the competition.
Â
At the next height, 1.72 meters (5'7 ¾"), Greggs cleared on her second attempt and Kelly failed to clear the bar. That effort locked up a third career PSAC title for Greggs and would have been enough to punch her ticket to nationals, but she pressed on to another height and went for 1.74 meters (5' 8 ½") as the only athlete left in the competition. She cleared that mark on her second attempt, establishing a new career-best and moving all the way up to No. 9 on the Division II national list.
Â
Greggs will officially be seeded in a tie for eighth at the National Championships as her height of 1.74 meters matches two others among the top 10 declared athletes. The top mark in the nation belongs to Chinenye Agina from Azusa Pacific at 1.83 meters (6'0"). The rest of the top 10 seeds are separated by just two inches between the second seed of 1.79 meters (5' 10 ½") and three women tied for eighth at 1.74 meters (5' 8 ½"). Only 16 women were accepted into the field with a cutoff of 1.72 meters (5'7 ¾").
Â
The top eight finishers at the national meet will be named first team All-Americans by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), while finishers 9-12 will earn second team All-America honors.
Â
A full preview for the national meet, including live coverage options, will be posted next week prior to the championships.
