Rock ready for home debut vs. Malone and Fairmont State

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team will play its first pair of home contests 1 p.m. Wednesday versus Malone and 1 p.m. Sunday against Fairmont State at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –  The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team will play its first pair of home games of the season this week when it hosts two non-conference opponents at Morrow Field House.
 
SRU begins Thanksgiving week 1 p.m. Wednesday against Malone University before welcoming Fairmont State University 1 p.m. Sunday.

ALL-TIME SERIES vs. FAIRMONT STATE
Slippery Rock holds a strong 6-2 lead over Fairmont State in the all-time series dating back to 1997. The Rock are a perfect 4-0 when hosting the Fighting Falcons with SRU defeating FSU by an average of 11.5 points per game.
 
LAST MEETING
A career-high 27 points from Quick and a 26-point, 23-rebound performance by Johnson lifted Slippery Rock University to an 86-84 double overtime victory at Fairmont State Jan. 2, 2022.

QUICK HITS
• Slippery Rock earned its third consecutive win in a last minute 66-62 comeback victory over Ursuline College Nov. 19 in Pepper Pike, Ohio.
 
• SRU is off to same 3-1 start to the season that it compiled during 2021-22. If The Rock were to go 2-0 this week, it would be only the second time since 1999-00 (24 seasons) that it held a 5-1 record through its first six games.
 
• After this week, Slippery Rock will begin a five-game Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover stretch traveling to Shepherd (Dec. 2) then Shippensburg (Dec. 3) before returning home to host Mansfield (Dec. 18) and Bloomsburg (Dec. 19) followed by a final game at East Stroudsburg (Dec. 30). 
 
• Kennedy Middleton averaged 13.5 points, 13.0 rebounds and 9.5 defensive rebounds per game to go along with three steals and one block last week, prompting her to be named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week.
 
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS AT HOME
The Rock has traditionally held solid on their home court when playing non-conference opponents. SRU is 9-3 against non-PSAC competition at Morrow Field House dating back to the 2014-15 season. Of those nine wins, five games were victories by a margin of at least 20 points with the largest win being by 41 points (65-24) over Penn State Allegheny during the 2014-15 season.
 
SEEING DOUBLE
Kennedy Middleton is shaping a strong senior campaign as she is currently on a three-game double-double streak. Middleton has now tallied double-doubles of 17 points and 10 rebounds (vs Davis & Elkins), 17 points and 16 rebounds (at Notre Dame) and 10 points and 10 rebounds (at Ursuline). Her efforts currently rank her 16th in all of Division II in double-doubles.
 
SHOOTERS SHOOT
The Rock's offense features four players who have average at least 10 points through four games and are shooting above 40 percent from the floor in Deleah Gibson, Bella Long, Isabellah Middleton and Kennedy Middleton.
 
Isabellah Middleton leads the team in scoring average with 20.0 points per game while shooting 41.2 percent. She also averages 7.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
 
Gibson tallies 16.0 ppg with a field goal percentage of 48.1 in addition to shooting a team-high 80 percent from the foul line. Additionally, she tallies 2.3 apg, 2.0 rpg and 1.0 spg.
 
Kennedy Middleton enters the week averaging 15.0 ppg while shooting 46.2 percent from the field. She showcases her versatility rounding out her averages with 9.8 rpg, 2.3 apg and 1.8 spg in addition to shooting 50 percent from 3-point range.
 
In two games, Long has averaged 13.0 points per game while shooting 53.3 percent from the floor. She is tied for the team-lead from long range at 50 percent.
 
FROM DEEP
Slippery Rock features a trio of players that have found success from long range early this season in Long, Isabellah Middleton and Kennedy Middleton. The trio have combined for 64.7 percent (22-of-34) of SRU's 3-point production. Long and Kennedy Middleton are each shooting 50 percent while Isabellah Middleton has shot 47.6 percent.
 
FRESHMAN INVOLVEMENT
After making six turnovers with just four points over the first three contests, freshman Jada Ward has settled into The Rock's rotation as he helped power SRU to its win over Ursuline with seven points, two assists, two steals and a rebound.
 
A LOOK AROUND THE CONFERENCE
As a team, Slippery Rock enters the weekend ranking among the top seven in the PSAC in five categories. SRU is second in 3-point percentage (.391), fourth in 3-pointers per game (8.5), sixth in defensive rpg (27.3), seventh in ppg (72.0) and seventh in field goal percentage (.417).
 
Individually, three players rank in the top 10 in at least one category among the PSAC.

Isabellah Middleton has tallied three 20-point performances over The Rock's first four games. She is currently tied for 16th in program history since 2002-03 in career 20-point games. Additionally, if Middleton were to have two 20-point showings over the week she would move into a tie with three former Rock players for first in consecutive 20-point games alongside Lexi Carpenter (2x), D'Asia Chambers and Missy McKavish.

SCOUTING THE FIGHTING FALCONS
Last time out: Fairmont State earned its first conference win in a 94-80 victory over Davis & Elkins Nov. 19 in Elkins. West Virginia.
 
As a team, the Fighting Falcons average 87.0 ppg and 32.3 rpg while shooting 42.8 from the floor overall, 22.7 percent from long range and 75.8 percent from the charity stripe.
 
The junior and senior duo of Alyssa DeAngelo and Katy Darnell pace the FSU offense. DeAngelo tallies 24.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg and 1.7 apg while Darnell averages 19.7 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 2.0 apg and 2.0 spg.
