SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's track and field team finished second and earned the runner-up trophy and thrower Jena Reinhiemer was named the Most Outstanding Field Athlete at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships that concluded Saturday evening from Shippensburg University.
Â
The Rock were out front for much of the day but couldn't hold off a strong charge from Shippensburg late in the meet. The Raiders pulled away to win with 131 points. Slippery Rock fought off a charge from Cal U by placing second in the 4x400-meter relay to lock up the runner-up trophy with 94.5 points. The Vulcans finished third with 88 points, followed by Kutztown in fourth with 66.5 points and Millersville in fifth with 66 points to round out the top five. Â
Â
Reinheimer took home the top field athlete award after voting by the coaches for her overall performance in the meet. She won the discus Friday and placed third in the hammer throw Thursday, both with career best marks.
Â
Slippery Rock opened the final day of the three-day meet with a bang by scoring 23 points in the javelin, led by a 1-2 finish from
Danielle Collier and
Trinity Clark. Collier won the competition in driving rain and heavy winds with a toss of 47.82 meters. Clark was second at 45.34 meters.
Skylar Sherry took fourth with a throw of 40.34 meters to round out the highest scoring event for SRU over the meet.
Â
The other All-PSAC finishers for SRU on the final day came in the 4x400-meter relay, where The Rock's foursome of
Courtney Nunley,
Lorna Speigle,
Allyson Stitzer and
Morgan Donatelli were put under pressure before the gun even sounded. SRU entered the final event with just a 1.5-point lead over Cal U for the second spot in the team standings, meaning The Rock couldn't afford to lose to Cal U in the relay. The SRU foursome moved from fifth to second in the final two legs with Donatelli bringing the group home in second place in a season-best time of 3:59.83.
Â
Donatelli and Speigle both scored in the 400-meter dash as well with Donatelli placing sixth in 59.12 seconds and Speigle finishing seventh in 59.58 seconds.
Â
Sarah Corrie continued a strong weekend for The Rock's throwers with a fourth place finish in the shot put after a toss of 12.88 meters. Over the four throwing disciplines, SRU's throwers tallied a total of 53 points to account for more than half of the team's final total.
Â
SRU had three athletes score in the pole vault with
Heidi Bednarz and
Olivia Sentle placing fifth and sixth with personal bests of 3.43 meters.
Kendall Grossman cleared the same height to place eighth.
Â
The Rock's 4x100-meter relay just missed out on an All-PSAC finish in fourth place after
Samantha Gilbert,
Thai-Lin Pierce,
Reagan Hess and Speigle teamed to post a time of 48.35 seconds.
Â
The final points of the day came from
Ashanti Richardson with a seventh place showing in the triple jump with a leap of 11.23 meters.
Â
Saturday's competition marked the end of the 2021 season for most of The Rock's roster. Collier and Clark rank second and fourth in the nation in the javelin and are poised for a trip to the NCAA National Championships May 27-29 at Grand Valley State. Hess is currently ranked 16th in the nation in the long jump and could earn a trip as well. Accepted entries for the national meet will be announced in two weeks. Â
