SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's track and field team moved into first place in the team standings after day two of competition at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships wrapped up Friday from Shippensburg University. Â
Â
The Rock lead the team race with 39 points after seven of the 21 events have been scored. SRU is trying to win a second straight PSAC outdoor title and a third straight overall track and field title after winning outdoor in 2019 and indoor in 2020. SRU will face a stiff test Saturday on the final day of competition with a number of teams in the mix. Millersville sits second with 34 points, followed by Shippensburg in third with 33 points. West Chester is fourth with 29 points, followed by Lock Haven in fifth with 28 points and Cal U in sixth with 24 points.
Â
Jena Reinheimer continued the best meet of her career by shocking the field to win the discus with a throw of 46.79 meters to highlight The Rock's performances Friday. That effort came one day after a personal best in the hammer led Reinheimer to a third place finish Thursday.
Trinity Clark also had a strong showing and placed fifth out of the first flight to give SRU 14 total points in the event.
Â
The Rock also got two other All-PSAC individual performances Friday with
Reagan Hess taking second in the long jump with a leap of 5.81 meters and
Cecily Greggs finishing third in the high jump with a clearance of 1.65 meters.
Â
Most of the other events that took place Friday were prelim races to set up Saturday's finals. The Rock qualified athletes in the 4x100-meter relay and the 400-meter dash. The 200-meter dash and 400-meter hurdle prelims were canceled by heavy rains and lightning. Those events will be contested as timed finals Saturday.
Â
The 4x100-meter relay team of
Samantha Gilbert,
Lorna Speigle,
Thai-Lin Pierce and
Courtney Nunley qualified with the fifth best time of 48.53 seconds. The Rock's fastest 100-meter runner, Hess, is likely to replace Nunley as the anchor in the finals Saturday.
Â
Morgan Donatelli and Speigle both earned a trip to the finals in the 400-meter dash with Donatelli posting the sixth best time of 58.35 seconds and Speigle qualifying eighth in 58.90 seconds.
Â
Competition resumes Saturday in the field events at 11 a.m. and on the track at 12:30 p.m. as the final 14 events will be contested.
