Rock pulls away for 5-1 win at Mercyhurst

Samantha Karmonick scored two goals and Kayla Del Vecchio handed out to assists to lead The Rock field hockey team to a 5-1 win on the road at Mercyhurst Tuesday night.

New/Sortable Box Score ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team tallied four second half goals to run away with a 5-1 victory on the road at Mercyhurst University Tuesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game from Saxon Stadium.

The Rock improve to 5-8 overall and 2-5 in PSAC games with the win, while the Lakers drop to 1-13 overall and 1-6 in PSAC games with the loss.

Slippery Rock opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Samantha Karmonick found the back of the cage off an assist from Kayla Del Vecchio to put The Rock up 1-0 after 7:44 had elapsed.

Mercyhurst tied the game at 1-1 in the 12th minute when Allyson Doran scored off a rebound for what would be the only other goal of the first half.

After both teams went scoreless in the second quarter, Slippery Rock wasted little time in busting the game open when Bailee Christman scored off a rebound just 2:58 into the second half to give The Rock a 2-1 lead. SRU would never relinquish that advantage and would extend the lead to 3-1 by the end of the third after Leslie Colliver tallied a goal off an assist from Jordyn Isner just shy of the 40-minute mark.

Isner's assist gives her six this season and moves her into a tie for fifth on the SRU single-season ledger. The Rock's single-season record for assists is currently owned by Kailee Krupski with eight in 2016.

Karmonick scored her second of the night off another assist from Del Vecchio early in the fourth quarter and Jessie Trube got in on the scoring with an insurance tally off an assist from Holly Stiller with just under five minutes to play to account for the final goal.

Slippery Rock posted advantages of 27-6 in total shots, 18-4 in shots on goal and 9-5 in penalty corners.

Grace Burker made three saves to pick up the win in goal for SRU.

Mercyhurst got 13 saves from Kayla Desormeau in the loss.

Tuesday's game marked the end of a three-game road swing for Slippery Rock, which will return home Saturday to host Bloomsburg at 2 p.m. on Senior Day.
