Get to Know The Rock Staff: Rayell Heistand

Check out the first of our "Get to Know Them" profiles featuring The Rock athletics staff as we check in with new field hockey coach Rayell Heistand.

Each Monday of the fall semester, we’ll be bringing you three different “Getting to Know Them” profiles on coaches, athletic administrators and athletic trainers at Slippery Rock to introduce you to the folks behind the scenes here at The Rock. First up, we check in with our new head field hockey coach Rayell Heistand.

QUICK BIO
Heistand joined the Slippery Rock family in the summer of 2020 as the 13th head coach in program history. She comes to The Rock after serving as an assistant coach at Division I Miami University of Ohio for the last five seasons, where she helped the RedHawks to four Mid-American Conference regular season titles, three MAC championships and three NCAA Tournament berths. Heistand was a two-time Division I All-American at UConn and started in all 87 games of her career with the Huskies from 2008-11, helping the program to go 71-16 over four years. Following her collegiate career, she went on to play for the U.S. National Team from 2013-15, earning nine caps.

IN HER WORDS
Q: What’s the first concert you went to? What’s the most recent concert you went to?
A: The first concert I ever went to was Aaron Carter. The most recent concert was Chris Stapleton.

Q: Tell us about your family.
A: My father, Cliff Heistand, is an engineer at a powerplant. He is frugal and likes to fix things. My mother, Diane Heistand, is a health and physical education teacher at the high school level. She is a dog whisperer and longtime track and field and field hockey coach. My sister, Karlie Heistand, played at UConn and is currently on the U.S. National Team and coaches at Villanova. My parents’ dog, Titan, lives up to his name. I have a boyfriend of six years, Collin Wallace, and we have a fur baby named Apollo. 

Q: What was your first job growing up?
A: My first job was working as a private swim lesson instructor.

Q: How do you relax?
A: I enjoy walking my dog Apollo and making him cuddle with me on the couch.

Q: What’s your favorite meal?
A: That would be Chicken Francese and garlic bread.

Q: What was your first car? What’s your dream car?
A: My first car was a manual Dodge Neon. My dream car would be a white Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Q: What artists and/or songs on your current most-listened to playlist?
A: It all depends on my mood, but the most played stations on my Pandora are “Queen Radio”, “90s Pop” and “Today’s Country.”

Q: What’s the best advice you ever received and who did it come from?
A: My mother, Diane, told me: “You don’t want to think shoulda, coulda, woulda.”

Q: When you go grocery shopping, are you the “Make a List” person or the “Just Wing It” person?
A: I HAVE to make a list. I’m a list person.

Q: Where is one place you haven’t visited yet, but you definitely plan to?
A: Oia, Santorini, Greece.

Q: Do you listen to podcasts? If so, what are your favorites?
A: I am just starting to listen to podcasts. I am currently listening to Dr. Death. 

Q: Can you sing?
A: No, not at all. 

Q: How many and what kind of pets do you have? How long have you had them?
A: I have a male yellow lab named Apollo that is almost five years old. 

Q: Cats or dogs?
A: DOGS.

Q: Does pineapple belong on pizza?
A: No.

Q: Sheetz or WaWa?
A: SHEETZ!

Q: What’s the last TV show you binged watched?
A: Game of Thrones

Q: How long can you go without looking at your phone?
A: That depends on the time of year. When school is in session, probably only 30 minutes. When school is not in session, I can go a couple hours. 

Q: What was the last app you downloaded on your phone? What is your most-used app?
A: The last app I downloaded is a hiking and trails app called AllTrails. My most used app is Outlook. 

Q: Retirement destination?
A: The Outer Banks or on a ski slope somewhere. Ideally one house at each!
