Rock women dominate home meet

Courtney McQuaide, Maddy Marshall and Reagan Hess all recorded NCAA provisional marks and The Rock women dominated the SRU Open with 11 event wins Thursday.

Final Results

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's outdoor track and field team recorded 25 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks, three NCAA provisional marks and won 11 events at the SRU Open Thursday at the William Lennox Track.

The Rock were dominant in their first home meet of the year, despite having to battle wind chills below 30 degrees and strong gusting winds all day. Those conditions may have helped the short sprints and the horizontal jumps, but made it nearly impossible to post impressive performances from any races above 200 meters.

Two of the three NCAA marks came in the pole vault, where Courtney McQuaide won the event with a season-best and NCAA provisional clearance of 3.91 meters, which currently ranks first in the PSAC and eighth in the nation. Maddy Marshall also cleared the same height and finished in second place to lead SRU to a total of six vaulters with at least the PSAC standard. Maria Darling and Roxanne Dunn tied for eighth place with matching marks of 3.46 meters and Erika Thomas and Julia Schuler tied for 12th with marks of 3.31 meters.

The other NCAA mark came in the long jump, where Reagan Hess won the competition with a leap of 5.85 meters. Hess also posted a PSAC qualifying mark in the 100-meter dash with a second place finish in 12.15 seconds and ran a leg of the winning 4x100-meter relay, where she joined with Megan Stephenson, Emily Horstman and Amanda Oliver to post a time of 49.62 seconds.

Horstman won the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash to lead The Rock to a total of six PSAC marks in the 100m and four in the 200m. She posted a time of 12.14 seconds in the 100m and 25.28 seconds in the 200m. Oliver followed Horstman and Hess in the 100m with a fourth place finish in 12.38 seconds. Aerial Dukes was fifth in 12.42 seconds, Vanessa Shedlock was sixth in 12.53 seconds and Stephenson was seventh in 12.57 seconds.

SRU swept the top four spots in the 200m with Dukes following Horstman in second in 25.64 seconds. Shedlock was third in 25.67 seconds and Oliver was fourth in 25.76 seconds. Horstman, Oliver and Shedlock closed their busy day by teaming with Alexis Marchando to win the 4x400-meter relay.

The Rock also picked up wins on the track in the 1,500-meter run and the 100-meter hurdles. Caitlyn Janeda took the top spot in the 1,500m with a time of 5:10.47 and Sophie Mazza won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.05 seconds.

Slippery Rock picked up wins in the triple jump, hammer throw and javelin throw to finish the meet with a total of five field event wins. Lexi Salopek won the triple jump with a leap of 10.75 meters, Elaina Powell claimed the javelin with a throw of 38.74 meters and Kelci Yale won the hammer with a toss of 45.34 meters. Yale also hit the PSAC mark with a third place finish in the shot put with a toss of 12.24 meters. She finished just behind Anna Frengel in second with a mark of 12.53 meters. Frengel also hit the PSAC standard in the hammer with a fourth place finish and a throw of 42.13 meters.

The final PSAC mark of the meet belonged to Juliet Ryan, who placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 12:17.19.

Slippery Rock will compete in a second meet later this week when it travels to Erie, Pennsylvania Saturday for the Penn State Behrend Invitational.
