Rock set for back-to-back weekend games

The Slippery Rock field hockey team will hit the road to play Kutztown Saturday followed by a home match against Bellarmine on Sunday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team will hit the road to play Kutztown University 11 a.m. Saturday for a non-conference matchup at Andre Reed Stadium followed by a non-conference home game against Bellarmine University 1 p.m. Sunday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

LAST MEETING vs. KUTZTOWN
The Golden Bears came out strong offensively against The Rock in their last meeting on Oct. 1 , 2016, netting three first half goals. Madison Stewart recorded Kutztown's first goal at the 13:40 mark, followed by a Morgan Aldinger score at 20:21. Courtney Konowal netted Kutztown's final goal of the first half in the 30th minute. The Rock held the Bears scoreless in the second half, but were unable to produce anything offensively, ultimately ceding the game to Kutztown with a score of 3-0.
 
KUTZTOWN SERIES HISTORY
The Rock's last win against Kutztown came in 2014, when they defeated the Golden Bears 2-0 at Slippery Rock. The win snapped a 17 game losing streak dating back to 2003. SRU has lost the last three matchups against Kutztown since that 2014 victory.

LAST MEETING vs. BELLARMINE
The Rock defeated Bellarmine, 5-2, in a high scoring affair at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium on Sept. 17, 2016. Slippery Rock and Bellarmine matched first half goals, at two apiece, before SRU separated themselves in the second half by recording three unanswered scores. The Rock received two goals apiece from Hannah Downing and Renee Rosenblum while Megan McKay added a score of her own. The Golden Bears saw goals from Lillie Nitzken and Amanda Jaworski.
 
BELLARMINE SERIES HISTORY
Bellarmine owns the all-time series edge over The Rock, 9-4, but SRU has had success against the Knights as of late with wins in two of their three previous contests, including a 3-2 overtime victory in their 2014 clash.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
LAST TIME OUT – Slippery Rock fell to Mansfield University, 1-0, in a non-conference home matchup. Larissa Motts put Mansfield on the board early, scoring at the 7:07 mark, before both teams went cold offensively for the remainder of the game. As a team, Mansfield held edges in shots (12-7), shots on goal (11-4) and penalty corner (10-6) over Slippery Rock.
 
SLIPPERY ROCK SCORER'S – SRU has recorded seven goals through three games so far this season. Kayla Ulrich leads the team with two goals, while Liz Wolfe, Brittany Morgan, Allison Martin, Sam Geroski and Abby McKay have all netted one score apiece.
 
A HELPING HAND – The Rock has four different players who have recorded an assist this year. Wolfe, Alyssa Castle, Brenna McGovern-Lind and Hannah Simone have all recorded one helper apiece.
 
SWITCHABLE STOPPERS – Through its first three games, Slippery Rock has rotated goalkeepers by half. Nicole Bream has started each game with Maddie Murphy subbing in for the second half to close each game out. So far, both players have produced very similar results. Bream has allowed two goals while recording eight saves for a .800 save percentage. Murphy has allowed one goal while recording eight saves for a .889 save percentage. The Rock's combined 18 saves which includes defensive saves from Wolfe and Jordan Barnes, ranks second in the PSAC.
 
THE BIG 5-0 – Head coach Julie Swiney has the chance to earn her 50th SRU win with a victory over Kutztown or Bellarmine. She enters Saturday's game against Kutztown with a 49-84 record during her time at The Rock.

SCOUTING THE BEARS
Kutztown enters the game fresh off of having won a 3-0 non-conference game against number 10 ranked Adelphi University.
 
The Golden Bears' three top scorers are Madison Stewart with seven points (three goals, one assist), Mackenzie Fuhrman with six points (one goal, four assists) and Trinity Ponton with five points (two goals, one assist).
 
Kutztown has recorded 11 goals as a team so far this season, which is good for third in the PSAC. Defensively, KU is one of three teams in the PSAC yet to allow a goal.
 
The Bears goalkeeper Chardonnay Hope has recorded shutouts in Kutztown's first two games of the season. She has also recorded four saves while facing just six shots through two games.

SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS
Prior to their game against Slippery Rock, the Knights will face Limestone College on Friday and Mansfield University on Saturday.
 
Currently, Bellarmine's leading point scorers are Carly Anson with six points (three goals), Elle Lichte with two points (one goal), Jillian Fazlo with one point (one assist) and Lillie Nitzken with one point (one assist).
 
Through two games, goalkeeper Heather Gregory has allowed five goals while recording 14 saves for a save percentage of .737.
