Rock set to open season with a pair of home games

The SRU field hockey team will open the season with a pair of home games over Labor Day weekend against Bellarmine and American International College.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University field hockey team will look to begin its 2015 season with a pair of home wins over Labor Day weekend against Bellarmine (Sunday at 12 p.m.) and American International College (Monday at 12 p.m.).

Records: Slippery Rock is coming off a 9-10 season and a 7-7 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Rock was picked to finish seventh in the PSAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
 
Bellarmine is coming off an 11-9 season with a 3-3 record in the Eastern College Athletic Conference. This season will be the second year of the new DII ECAC Field Hockey league.
 
American International finished the 2014 season with a 12-8 record and a berth in the Northeast-10 Conference with a 7-4 conference record. The Yellow Jackets were picked to finish seventh in the NE-10 Preseason Coaches Poll.  
 
Scouting The Rock: SRU returns 15 players from last fall, while also adding 11 freshmen to the roster.
 
Junior forward Michelle Couch is The Rock's top returning scorer with three goals and two assists last season. Junior Megan McKay notched one goal and five assists last season, while sophomore Kailee Krupski added three goals in 2014.
 
SRU also returns senior goalkeeper Carlee DuMars who started in all 19 games last season and recorded 87 saves. DuMars posted a 1.35 goals against average and a .763 save percentage.
 
Scouting the Knights: Bellarmine returns its top three scorers from last fall.
 
Junior Kelsey O'Bryan led the team with 10 goals and 11 assists. Senior Alexis Van Wallaghen and junior Kathryn Schneidtmiller each recorded 10 goals and seven assists in 2014.
 
The Knights also return their top four defensive players, including ECAC First-Team selection Hannah Doll. Other top returners are Kelci Kirchdorfer, Claire McCormick, and Mary Ringwald.
 
Scouting the Yellow Jackets: American International returns 17 players from 2014 and added nine incomers to the roster.
 
AIC returns four double-digit scorers from last season, led by junior forward Taylor Ruscillo and senior midfielder Erica McLean, who recorded 15 and 11 points, respectfully.
 
Second-team All-Conference senior goalkeeper Ainslee Penfield returns for her senior year between the pipes.
 
Series:
Bellarmine: The Rock beat the Knights last fall 3-2 in overtime to bring the all-time series between the teams to 2-6.
 
American International: SRU defeated AIC 2-0 last season to move to 2-1 in the series with the Yellow Jackets.
