Traditional Box ScoreSPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team started off the 2014 season on a positive note by picking up a 2-0 victory over American International College in Massachusetts Saturday afternoon.

Despite being outshot 7-1 in the first half,
Carlee DuMars held the Yellow Jackets scoreless as the The Rock's stingy defense and net presence carried them into the break tied 0-0.

The Rock flipped the script on American International in the second frame, pouring on the pressure and outshooting the Yellow Jackets 9-1 on its way to a pair of second-half goals to secure the 2-0 victory.

A trio of seniors fueled an offensive surge in the second half.
Anna Swearingen scored The Rock's first goal of the season on a put-back off a saved shot from classmate
Allison Shade in the 45
th minute.
Kelsey Gustafson added an insurance goal on a penalty shot in the 60
th minute.
DuMars was excellent in front of the cage, tallying five saves in her first win and shutout of the season.

The Rock held a 10-8 advantage in shots, while AIC posted advantages of 6-5 in saves and 9-4 in corners.

With the win, Slippery Rock begins the season at 1-0 and will look to stay perfect with a meeting against Bellarmine Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.
