SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – A 5-0 run early in the second half led hosting Shippensburg to a 17-16 win over Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action on a rainy Saturday at the Robb Sports Complex.

The loss is the fourth straight for Slippery Rock with three of those coming by just one goal and the other loss coming to nationally ranked West Chester yesterday. The Rock sees their season records fall to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in PSAC play. Shippensburg improves to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in conference action.

Slippery Rock had to battle heavy driving rain and wind in the final 20 minutes and also had to deal with being down two players in the final minute while trying to complete the comeback.

The teams traded short bursts of momentum for much of the first half before a 3-0 Rock run put the visitors in front for the first time, 10-9 with 3:08 to play before halftime. Shippensburg tallied a goal with just 15 seconds before the break to send it to intermission tied at 10-10.

Slippery Rock scored the first two goals of the second half in less than two minutes to lead 12-10, but the Lady Raiders answered with a 5-0 run to take a 15-12 lead with 16:12 to play.

The Rock rallied to cut the deficit to 15-14 with 11:20 to play, but the teams traded goals from there to account for the final 17-16 score. Slippery Rock was issued two yellow cards in the final 2:22 of the game, being forced to play down at least one player for that duration and down two players for 31 seconds, effectively eliminating the chance at notching the tying goal.

Paige Costantino and Morgan Pettit each tallied five goals to lead the offensive effort for Slippery Rock, while Costantino added an assist for a team-high six points. Kaytlin Callaghan chipped in two goals and two assists and Jess Verbic scored one goal and handed out one assist to cap the multiple point scorers.

Anna-Marie Warrington, Erin Wilcox and Katie Cook each scored one goal and Wilcox and Cook led the team with four draw controls each. Kaitlyn Hafdell led the team with five ground balls.

Hannah Houde started the game in goal but was pulled less than seven minutes in after allowing six goals on seven shots. Jordan Wagner played the final 53:48 and made 10 saves in the losing effort.

Shippensburg was led by an eight-point game from Bennett Widlake with seven goals and one assist. She also finished with a game-high seven draw controls. Sheila Johnson added four goals and one assist for the Lady Raiders.

Ally Frymoyer played the entire game in goal for Shippensburg and made five saves in the win.

The Lady Raiders finished the game with advantages of 41-25 in shots and 20-15 in draw controls, but were just 4-of-11 on clear attempts. Slippery Rock managed a 23-21 advantage in ground balls and was 7-of-13 on the clear.

Saturday marked the fifth consecutive road game for The Rock, who will return home to Mihalik-Thompson Stadium for their next three games beginning Tuesday night (April 1) when Gannon visits for a 7 p.m. PSAC game.
